DESIGN PROCEDURE – FLAT SLAB
➢ Calculate the slab thickness using table 9.5 (c) of
ACI Code. Assume α > 0.80 if edge beam is present.

SOLUTION
1.Slab thickness. According to ACI code table 9.5 (c)
slab thickness for exterior and interior panel with edge
beam and for grade 40 steel (assuming α ≥ 0.80) is
given by
h = ln /40
For 18’’ circular column equivalent square column
= √(π/4 d2 ) = √( π/4 (18)2 = 16’’
ln = 25 -16/12 = 23.667 ft

Assumed loaded area for shear is shown in figure.

Increase thickness of the drop panel to 11’’.

Vu = [20 x 25 – 26 x 26 /144] x 0.344 = 170.39 kips

Check for punching shear beyond the drop ( where
thickness of slab changes to 7’’) would be ok.

For calculation of steel reinforcement we use flexural
formula,
Mu = ɸρbd2 fy(1- 0.59 ρfy/f’c)
For example for a moment of 36.14 kft, As is worked
out as under:
36.14x12 =0.9 x ρx12(10)2x40(1- 0.59ρ40/3)
7.87ρ2 - ρ + 0.0100 = 0
ρ = 0.01099
As= ρbd = 0.01099x12x10x10= 13.18 in2
use 30#6 bars
Note 1. For C.S -ve moment in both directions, b for
calculation of steel area has been taken as 10 ft.
2. #6 bars have been used in C.S. and #5 in M.S.
