Vitamins
Vitamins are the micro-nutrients required for the proper growth and maintenance of our
body and organs.
They help with the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates required for the body
development.
Vitamins are not developed/ synthesized inside human body. Hence, our food should have
appropriate amounts of vitamins meet the required levels.
1. Vitamin A (Retinol)
o Sources: Dark green and yellow coloured vegetables and fruits, cod liver oil, Milk,
Butter and other dairy products.
o Diseases: Night-blindness, Hyperkeratosis, and Keratomalacia.
o Solubility: Fat.
2. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
o Sources: Pork, oatmeal, brown rice, vegetables, potatoes, liver, eggs.
o Diseases: Beriberi, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
o Solubility: Water.
3. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
o Sources: Dairy products, bananas, popcorn, green beans, asparagus
o Diseases: Ariboflavinosis

4. Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
o Sources: Cereals, seeds, meat, fish – tuna, etc.

5. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

13.Vitamin K (Phylloquinone)
o Sources: Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, egg yolks, liver.
