Vitamins, Minerals and its related Diseases

Vitamins

 Vitamins are the micro-nutrients required for the proper growth and maintenance of our
body and organs.
 They help with the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates required for the body
development.
 Vitamins are not developed/ synthesized inside human body. Hence, our food should have
appropriate amounts of vitamins meet the required levels.

Sources and Diseases caused by Vitamin Deficiency


The Following table contains the sources of all the important Vitamins:

1. Vitamin A (Retinol)
o Sources: Dark green and yellow coloured vegetables and fruits, cod liver oil, Milk,
Butter and other dairy products.
o Diseases: Night-blindness, Hyperkeratosis, and Keratomalacia.
o Solubility: Fat.
2. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
o Sources: Pork, oatmeal, brown rice, vegetables, potatoes, liver, eggs.
o Diseases: Beriberi, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
o Solubility: Water.
3. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
o Sources: Dairy products, bananas, popcorn, green beans, asparagus
o Diseases: Ariboflavinosis
o Solubility: Water
4. Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
o Sources: Cereals, seeds, meat, fish – tuna, etc.
o Diseases: Pellagra
o Solubility: Water
5. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
o Sources: Brocolli, sweet potatoes, beans, eggs, etc.
o Diseases: Paresthesia

6. Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
o Sources: Pistachio nuts, Sesame seeds, Chicken, etc.
o Diseases: Anaemia peripheral neuropathy.

7. Vitamin B7 (Biotin)

Minerals are specific kinds of nutrients that your body needs in order to function properly.

 A mineral deficiency occurs when your body doesn’t obtain or absorb the required amount
of a mineral.
 There are five main categories of mineral deficiency: calcium, iron, magnesium,
potassium, and zinc.

o Sources: Milk and Milk Products, Eggs, Wheatgrass etc.
o Diseases: Osteoporosis, Hypocalcemia, Ostopenia
2. Iron

3. Magnesium
