“Quantifying Students Interest: A Quantitative Analysis of the Basic Ecclesial Communion

at Mt. Carmel School of Siargao Inc. and San Nicolas School of Dapa Inc.”

Background of the study:

The significant of the BEC’s for the Christian church today lies in their peculiar

understanding of the Christian faith.

The Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) are small communities, usually of

families who gather together around the Word of God and the Eucharist. The Church firmly

recognizes the significant role of the Basic Ecclesial Communities in the realization of her own

renewal. United with the one Church, the Basic Ecclesial Communities are the presence of the

Church and the expression of the Catholic faith in her smallest units; therefore, in these modern

times the BEC serves as an effective means of evangelization – which is the proclamation of the

teachings of Jesus – so as to lead each of the baptized, who are established among the People of

God, towards a genuine knowledge, love of, and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. Diocese of

Lucena. (n.d.).
The “basic” are members belong to the lowest sectors of society; that is, they

spring up especially in the peripheries of urban concentrations or in the middle of rural areas.

There, small groups of twenty to fifty people meet once or twice a week to share their faith, to

celebrate, to reflect upon the situation in which they live, to study the Bible, to decide how to try

to resolve their common problems. The “ecclesial” is when they meet they are deeply aware that

they are coming together as part of the church of Jesus Christ; that is, they are fellowships of

believers, responding to a common call. The “communities” is the relationship established

among their members is not confined only to the place where they meet; there is a strong bond of

solidarity among them. They share hopes and struggles, what little they have, and also their

efforts to secure for themselves and others a more human life. They are convinced that life does

not belong just to individual persons or even to separate families, but that it is something that

people have in common. Catholink. (2023, June 2)

BECs often prioritize the marginalized and advocate for social transformation. By

integrating faith and daily life, they seek to address both spiritual and material needs within the

community. The movement has spread globally, adapting to various cultural contexts and

denominations.
In the context of Catholic schools, integrating BECs can enhance the spiritual and

communal aspects of education, fostering a sense of faith, shared values, and mutual support

among students and staff. This approach aligns with the Catholic Church's emphasis on

community involvement and social responsibility. Incorporating BECs into Catholic schools can

contribute to a holistic education that nurtures not only academic growth but also spiritual and

moral development.

For Catholic students, participating in BECs can enhance their spiritual formation,

provide a sense of community, and encourage a deeper understanding of Catholic teachings. It

also aligns with the Church's emphasis on the importance of community in the journey of faith.

It's important for Catholic schools to encourage the formation of BECs among

students, as they contribute to the holistic development of individuals by integrating faith into

their academic and social experiences. This approach helps create a well-rounded educational

environment that nurtures both intellectual and spiritual growth.

BEC is one of the activities where you don't have to use your brain in the same way

as other subjects, so you can refresh your audience that you can't talk about other subjects.

Catholic schools have a task of forming the religious faith of their students. This includes there

academic performance in a certain subject like rel.ed of how the students was interested in this

particular activity.
