Marks
What marks do colleges/universities look at?
Each school is a little different. Generally, Canadian schools
look only at courses from:
• Grade 11 (course codes with the number 3, e.g., NBE3C)
• Grade 12 (course codes with the number 4, e.g., ENG4C).

Schools outside of Canada generally look at all high school

marks.
Marks
What marks count for admission?
Only 3C/3M/3U and 4C/4M/4U are considered. O-level
courses and co-op are not considered. Schools do not see if
a course is Gifted or non-Gifted. Schools do not see if a
course is AP or non-AP.

Grade 11 marks
Used to advantage an applicant if they are strong.
**Admission decisions are only based on marks from
required Grade 12 prerequisite courses**

Tips for Grads
Be mindful of your social media image when applying
for jobs, scholarships, awards, programs...
Myth vs Fact
Myth: Schools count it against you for taking courses
in summer school, night school, and online.

Fact: Schools cannot discriminate between the format

of a course. Some highly competitive programs at some
highly competitive schools may look for outliers in
academic performance if a course is taken outside your
normal school board (for example, an unusually higher
mark in a course taken privately).
Myth vs Fact
Myth: You need to complete your program’s
prerequisite courses prior to November of your Grade 12
year to apply.

Fact: You need to complete your program’s

prerequisite courses by the end of June of your
graduating year.
Myth vs Fact
Myth: The order of your program’s prerequisite
courses on your Grade 12 timetable influences your
chances of being accepted into a program.

Fact: Schools cannot discriminate due to the order of

your courses. The order of your courses does not
influence your chances of being accepted. The sooner
you apply online, the sooner you can expect to hear back.
What If I Don’t Get In?
✔ Do your research right and have a plan A, B, and C.
✔ Have a reach goal, a solid goal, and a backup plan.
✔ Apply to programs you have a reasonable
chance to get accepted into.
✔ Find out if your college/university has automatic
alternate offers of admission.
(To automatically consider you for a similar program
if you are not accepted into the program you
applied to).
What If I Don’t Get In?
“I did not get accepted into the programs I
applied for. What do I do?”

👉 Starting in the spring, use the Find a Program tool on

the OntarioColleges.ca website to search for college
programs that are still open/available.

👉 Starting in June, use the OUAC’s Admission

Information Service to search for university programs
that still have availability.
