Answer all questions.

1 Impulse-momentum theorem state that the impulse J of a body equals to the change of the
body momentum given by J = Δp. While momentum is defined as the product between
mass, m and velocity, v. Determine the dimension and SI base unit for Impulse.

2 (a) A car which is initially at rest start to move along a straight line with constant
acceleration. It reaches a velocity of 60 m s−1 after travelling through a distance of
100 m. Determine the

(i) acceleration.
(ii) time taken to reach the velocity of 60 m s−1.

block is pulled to the left from point B to point A and released at time
t = 0. The block then oscillates between positions A and C with 40.0 cm. The block
takes 40.0 s to make 20 oscillations.

(i) Determine the period of this oscillating.


(ii) Determine the amplitude of this oscillating.
(iii) Determine the spring constant of the spring.
(iv) Write an equation that describes the position of the mass as a function
of time, if starting from equiliblium position B at time t = 0.
(v) Determine the maximum speed of the block.
(vi) Determine the amount of energy of the oscillating system.

(b) A progressive wave propagates by the equation

(c) You are given a closed air column of 0.8 m long. When a sound source with a speed
of 344 m s−1 is placed near the opened end, stationary wave is generated in the air
column.

(i) Determine the frequency for first overtone.


(ii) Sketch the stationary wave formed for this first overtone frequency.

(d) The frequency of a police car’s siren is 1800 Hz when at rest. What frequency do you
detect if your car with a speed of 30 m s−1 moving toward the police car? Assume that
the speed of sound is 343 m s−1.

7 (a) An aluminium wire with diameter 1.5 mm is suspended from a rigid support
with a load of 150 kg attached to its lower end. If the wire becomes 5.5 m long, what
is the initial length of the wire.
(Young’s modulus of aluminium is 7× 1010 N m−2)

Two bars of the same diameter but different materials are joined end to end as shown
in FIGURE 9. One end of the bars is kept at 80 C while the other end is at 5 C.
Determine the steady state temperature at the interface of the bars if the length of the
first bar is twice that of the second bar.
(Given thermal conductivity of the first bar is 240 W m−1 C−1 and the second one is
110 W m−1 C−1)

(c) A block of gold has dimensions of 0.12 m × 0.10 m × 0.08 m at temperature of 30


C. If the temperature increases to 120 C, determine the change in the volume of
the gold block.
(The coefficient of linear expansion for gold = 1.4 × 10 −6 C−1)

8 (a) A sample of oxygen gas of mass 7.3 x 10−26 kg is placed in a container.


Calculate the root mean square speed of molecules of the oxygen gas at 20 C.

(b) A 0.9 m3 tank contains 2 moles of helium gas at 28oC. Assuming that helium
behaves as an ideal gas, determine the

(i) total internal energy of the helium gas.


(ii) average translational kinetic energy of each molecule.

(c) A gas system with an initial volume of 2.0 m3 is compressed with a constant pressure
of 25 kPa. Calculate the final volume of the gas if work done on it is 5 kJ.
