TIME AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT WORKSHEET 40 marks

1. i) Time is worth money. Explain the concept of time as a measure of economic worth. 3)

Time is one of the key inputs necessary to successfully complete a task. A person must use their
time wisely and efficiently. Therefore the person who is willing to give up their time is more likely
to achieve a worthwhile goal, and see the full value of their results. This way time can be
converted into value and even financial gain.

ii) Give 2 suggestions to help save time in work when performing a task. 2)

Two suggestions to help save time in work when performing a task are:

1. Planning. Plan the method you will use before starting a task. This will help to avoid
problems and allow the task to be performed efficiently.

2. Set clear goals. Knowing what you want to achieve, will help you to know if you are going
in the right direction.

2 i) Explain the meaning of the term “work simplification”. 2)

Work simplification is the idea of identifying the simplest, easiest and quickest method of working.
It is a way of managing time more skillfully.

ii) List 3 factors that affect work simplification. 3)

Three factors that affect work simplification are:

1. Type of task. A big task which can be separated into smaller tasks, can be analysed to see
if all of the small tasks are necessary or if some tasks can be merged together to make the
larger task easier.

2. Use of correct procedures. Before starting a task a check should be done to make sure
that all the necessary equipment and supplies will be available when needed. This will
make sure that there are no problems to slow down the completion of the task.

3. Time management. Having a plan before starting a big task can help to identify ways that
small tasks that make up the big task, can be combined or completed in the correct order.
This creates sequencing, which is important in work simplification and time management.
iii) List 4 strategies for using time efficiently in carrying out routine tasks. 4)

Four strategies for using time efficiently in carrying out routine tasks are:

1. Omit unnecessary tasks and actions

2. Know the task from beginning to end
3. Have a plan in order to avoid going over steps in your tasks
4. Use rhythmic motions when possible to save energy and time

iii) Describe TWO work simplification strategies used in the home. 3)

Two work simplifications strategies used in the home are:

1. Sequencing. Sequencing means organising tasks by putting them in order of first task to
last task, which must be done to complete an overall task. For example: The dough must
be prepared first when making pizza before adding the toppings, such as pepperoni and
cheese. The last task is placing the pizza in the oven for its final baking.

2. Principle of body mechanics. Keeping your body in good shape allows you to efficiently
use your energy when completing a task. For example: If you are painting a room in your
home it may require climbing a ladder and stretching to reach high areas. If you are out
of shape you will take longer since you will have to stop to rest more. Stretching may
cause injury and stop you from completing your task.
