1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. KTM RACE ON
KTM RACE ON provides the KTM RACE ON is a passive access and start system (PEPS). It enables
following functions to access hands-free interaction with the vehicle, allowing the rider to lock/unlock the
the motorcycle:
motorcycle and to start/stop the vehicle engine without requiring a manual
• Immobilizer intervention with an ignition key.
• Passive access (PE)
The mechanical key, which is still provided, is only used to open and close the
• Passive start (PS) seat. KTM RACE ON is a more natural and convenient way to unlock and start
It also includes the following the vehicle while maintaining a high level of security.
system configuration functions:
These systems were introduced in the automotive industry in series for the first
A learning method for pairing a time in 1999. These are known and proven systems.
vehicle with a key fob.
Since KTM RACE ON works on the basis of the distance between transmitter
and receiver, the maximum ranges in the owner's manual of the vehicle and
the training documents must be observed. These new passive access and start
systems function in the same way as their previous counterparts, but offer a
much higher level of security. Modern systems use rolling encryption (RKE
rolling codes) which effectively allows billions of possible code combinations.
KTM RACE ON randomly generates a number that is encrypted by the active
race on key and analyzes the returned signal. The vehicle is then activated
depending on the validity of the signal.
As soon as the race on button is pressed, the system switches from “Sleep
mode” to transmit mode. An encoded LF signal (low frequency signal)
is transmitted via the antenna. The confirmation is received in the high
frequency (HF) band. If the ignition key with the transponder is within range,
it receives the signal, decodes it, and transmits it again with a new coding
in the high frequency band. The signal is in turn decoded by the control unit
in the vehicle. The control unit recognizes both coding tables and is able to
compare them: If the code matches, the vehicle is activated. If there is no
correct response within a defined time period, nothing happens and the vehicle
switches back to “Standby”.

2. COMPONENTS
2.1. RACE ON KEY
The active race on key works
with UHF in the frequency
range from 300 MHz to 3 GHz.

KTM motorcycles equipped with KTM RACE ON are delivered with these race
on keys:
1 Active race on key
With a folding, mechanical key for the daily use of the motorcycle.
Receiver: LF signal (low frequency signal)
Transmitter: HF signal (high frequency signal)
Power supply: button battery 3 V (CR2032)
Range: max. 1.5 m

2 Passive race on key (emergency key):

Receiver: LF signal (low frequency signal)
Transmitter: LF signal (low frequency signal)
Power supply: by the received signal
Range: max. 2 cm

3 Card with a mechanical key code:

A spare key can be ordered with the key code.

The immobilizer interface between the race on key and the main unit provides a
high level of security through its hardware encryption coprocessor and can also
handle mutual authentication schemes. The immobilizer interface also works
without battery support.
The active race on key manages immobilizer communication and the low-
frequency signal (LF) wake-up reception. The special design achieves
communication ranges of up to 1.5 m.

Security keys and codes can be stored in the integrated memory.

This memory can be accessed via the low frequency (LF) signal interface
without the support of the battery in the active race on key. The passive race
on key provides a special battery backup mode to operate the microcontroller
without battery support.

4. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

NOTE

Always keep the active race on key on your body. The race on key must
not be stored in a case or backpack.

NOTE

The active race on key must not be kept together with a cell phone, for
example. Radio waves can interfere with reception.

After pressing the race on button, KTM RACE ON checks whether a valid race
on key (active or passive) is within range and/or whether a race on key is held
to the antenna.
During this search, the yellow indicator lamp (immobilizer) lights up for
100 ms.
The maximum range of the active race on key is 1.5 m.
The maximum range of the black, passive race on key is 2 cm.

Section - Functional description

If the active race on key is out of range or its battery, located inside the
housing of the active race on key, is depleted, KTM RACE ON will not respond
and, in the event of an error, the respective blink code will be displayed.

If KTM RACE ON detects an error, the reason for the error is indicated by the
yellow indicator lamp of the immobilizer with a blink code.

• The active race on key includes an electronic transmitter, a passive

transponder, and a folding key for the seat lock. If the battery is completely
discharged, the active race on key functions like the black race on key.
• The passive race on key contains a passive transponder which only has a
very short range. To unlock KTM RACE ON, the passive race on key must
be less than / a maximum of 2 cm in front of the antenna (see the location
of the components).

5. DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM

5.1. TRANSMITTER (ACTIVE RACE ON KEY)
Main unit
LF antenna
LF link
Active race on key
HF link
HF antenna (integrated
in wiring harness)

The active race on key functions like the passive race on key, but has an
additional radio frequency (RF). The race on key receives data sent at low
frequency (LF) but responds in the high frequency band (HF). HF transmission
requires more electrical power, which is why the active race on key has a 3 V
battery as its power source. The active race on key has a maximum range of
1.5 m.

Section - Description of the system

Radio transmission functions:

• After pressing the race on button, KTM RACE ON activates the race on key
via an LF signal.

• If an active race on key is within range (1.5 m or less away), it will respond
via an HF signal.

• If a passive race on key is within range (2 cm or less from the LF antenna),

it will respond via an LF signal.

• If a valid race on key has been detected, the KTM RACE ON control unit
will switch on the ignition system.

• If the ignition system was switched on with a normal race on key, a cyclic
query is performed every 70 seconds until the vehicle exceeds a certain
speed.
After a successful response from the race on key, KTM RACE ON will activate
terminal 15 (IGP ignition +).

Section - Description of the system

5.2. TRANSPONDER (PASSIVE RACE ON KEY)

The transponder is a low frequency (LF) transmitter. It uses the electromagnetic

field generated by the field of a transmitting coil in the antenna.

Reading unit in the main unit of KTM RACE ON

Transponder in the passive race on key
LF antenna
Power and data exchange

Reading unit:
• Generates a magnetic field to supply the transponder with power
• Transmits commands and data by influencing the magnetic field
• Receives information from the transponder and demodulates it

Transponder:
• Transmits content from its memory
• No battery required

Since the magnetic field supplies the transponder with power, the range of the
passive race on key is extremely limited (less than or equal to 2 cm).

5.3. COMMUNICATION LINKS

The communication link between the motorcycle, the KTM RACE ON system,
and the race on key is described above.

Section - Description of the system

5.4. SYSTEM DIAGRAM

• The KTM RACE ON control unit is supplied with a permanent positive via a
10 A fuse.

• The communication between KTM RACE ON and all other control units is
via a high-speed CAN bus interface.

• KTM RACE ON is connected to the wiring harness via a socket connector.

6. DIAGNOSIS SPECIFICATION

KTM RACE ON has a self-diagnostic system that allows the use of Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTC) that indicate an error or problem in a circuit or
component. If an error is detected, the control unit stores a DTC (readable with
the XC_2 diagnostic tool) and displays a blink code via the race on indicator
lamp. The control lamp of KTM RACE ON is then activated and displays the
blink code.

This is achieved by means of a direct signal from KTM RACE ON to the LED
of the alarm/immobilizer on the TFT display. The LED indicator must flash at
intervals of 0.3 seconds (0.3 s ON, 0.3 s OFF).
