Course Overview

Pre-Requisite(s): Intermediate 10

Course Book: Master Mind Book 1, Macmillan Education, Units 9 - 10

Intermediate Eleven is a course that covers the topics of competition and risk.

In terms of communicative functions and linguistic issues, this course addresses paraphrasing and
speculating.

The new vocabulary includes scientific nouns and verbs, expressions of emotion, phrases related to
safety and expressions with risk. The language forms used are gerunds after prepositions, verb+
gerund, expressing ability and past modals of deduction.

Evaluation
Please refer to the Euroidiomas Language Assessment System (ELAS) Guide by using the QR code at
the end of this document. You can also use the following ideas for speaking grades and writing
grades, as well as projects.

Evaluation Task 1

This evaluation task is aligned with the Speaking Standard for Unit 9:

Can paraphrase written passages about brain development.

Task:

Students read about brain development and have some minutes to organize their ideas before
presenting them to others. They get into groups and decide who speaks first, second and third. The
teacher circulates and ask groups to report on what each person said.

Evaluation Task 2

This evaluation task is aligned with the Speaking Standard for Unit 10:

Can speculate about causes, consequences, and hypothetical situations. ( E.g. He may have thought
it was some type of candy. He can't have known it was a meteorite!)

Task:

The teacher gives students only a part of a story. Students form groups and speculate about the rest
of the story.

Evaluation Task 3

This evaluation task is aligned with the Speaking Objective for Unit 9:

Can speculate about causes, consequences, and hypothetical situations. ( e.g. He may have thought
it was some type of candy. He can't have known it was a meteorite!)

Task:

The teacher gives students different pictures and students speculate in pairs and create a story.
After some minutes, teacher switches their pictures and they continue speculating.

Writing

This writing task is aligned with the Writing Objective for Unit 9:

Can write a detailed description on a range of topics. (e.g. This show presents the life of a family that
is devoted to restoring antiques. They....)

Task:
Students write a description of their favorite game when they were kids.

Project 1

Students make a presentation about an extreme sport they have practiced or they would never
practice.

Project 2

Students present the story of an extremely competitive person.
