Homework

Consider our home have a large grounds space for ground mounted PV system. We want to supply our
home electricity demand by PV system. The total load is given as in table and assume that the average
sunshine for that location is 6 hours.
Design a PV system and battery for your home.

Answer

Figure 1: Solar spec selection

• Total energy consumption

𝐸𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 72.6 𝑘𝑊ℎ = 72 600𝑊ℎ
Given : 𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑠𝑢𝑛 = 6ℎ , ηB = 90% , ηi = 95% , ηc = 85%

• Total power of the PV

𝐸 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙
𝑃𝑃𝑉 =
𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑠𝑢𝑛 × ηB × ηi × ηc
72600
=
6 × 0.9 × 0.95 × 0.85

= 16649.46𝑊
• Number of solar panel
𝑃𝑃𝑉 16649.46
𝑁𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 = = = 27.749 ≈ 28
𝑃𝑚𝑎𝑥,𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 600
Showing that, we select solar 28 panels
• Charge controller sizing
𝐼𝑐𝑐 = 1.2 𝐼𝑠𝑐 = 1.2 × 14.48 = 17.376𝐴 ≈ 18𝐴
• Inverter sizing
𝑃𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1.3 𝑃𝑃𝑉 = 1.3 × 16649.46 = 21644.298𝑊
Figure 2: Inverter spec selection
• Battery sizing
𝐸𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 × 𝑛𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑦
𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
𝑉𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 × η𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 × 𝐷𝑜𝐷

𝑛𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑎𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑦 (𝑛𝑜 𝑠𝑢𝑛𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒) = 1

𝑉𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 𝑖𝑠 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = 12 𝑉

𝜂𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 = 𝜂𝐶𝐶 × 𝜂𝐵𝐴 = 0.85 × 0.90 = 0.765

DOD = 50%

72600 × 1
𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = = 16817𝐴ℎ
0.765 × 0.5 × 12

Based on the calculation result, we need 56 batteries for supply.
