NOTES:
1 - SCOPE
1.1 - This specification describes surface preparation & coating for all items of SITES JOB C-940.
1.2 - Each item is divided in areas (zones) where coating system could be different in relation with
service conditions.
1.3 - The items to be treated and the dedicated coating system for each zone are listed on sheet 3 to 4.
Surface preparation & coating shall be performed according the following Main standards:
• 30.48.00.31-P6000CFP-000-PV
• DEP 30.48.00.31-Gen - Protective Coatings for Onshore Facilities
• SSPC Volume 1° - Good Painting Practice
• SSPC Volume 2° - System & Specifications
• SSPC SP-1 – Surface cleaning and degreasing
• ISO 8501-1 Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products – Visual
assessment of surface cleanliness.
The following additional requirements and information shall be based on applicable project
specification
DEP 30.48.00.31-Gen that shall be used in conjunction with this document:
- Reference standard, codes and specifications
- Environmental conditions
- Healt, Safety and Environment
- Painting & Coating Materials
- Surface Preparation
- Painting & Coating application (including repairing activity if any)
- Maintenance of coating
- Inspection and Testing.
1.4 - Surface preparation type & grade, type & number of coats shall be in accordance with
applicable project specification.
In case of missing requirements or differences between this procedure and other documents, Company
Specification shall govern.
1.5 - Quality Control Report for surface preparation, coating & final inspection will be issued on client
request as per sample shown on sheet 6 of this procedure. All operations concerning painting as stated
in the present specification, shall be recorder in a daily log.
2 - SURFACE PREPARATION
2.1 - Surface preparation shall be at the grade requested for each coating system.
2.2 - All surfaces shall be free of dust, oil, grease and other contaminants. If any contamination is
detected before painting, the affected surface shall be properly cleaned and re-blasted.
2.3 Components in alloy/exotic/stainless steel material normally shall not be painted and then shall be
protected from paint overspray specifically zinc pigmented paints.
A dedicate paint cycle , duly approved by client , can be applied only when required into the client
specification.
2.4 - Abrasive blasting of carbon steel surfaces shall be performed using adequate tools, free of
moisture, oil or contaminants and non producing silica dust. Painter workshop shall be provided by two
blasting shops using metallic grit, automatically filtered and de-dusted during recycling. All abrasive
products used shall meet the requirements of ISO 11126 - 11127 (non-metallic abrasive), and ISO
11124 (metallic abrasive).
2.5 - In case of stainless steel or similar materials, abrasive shall be of non-metallic type.
2.6 - Weld spatters, pores, lamination defects, fragments and dents shall be grinded smooth. Sharp
edges shall be rounded at a 3 mm radius. Special care shall be taken for bolt heads and weld seams.
2.7 - The first coat of paint shall be applied before any oxidation or turning appears on the surface,
within four hours after blasting is completed.
2.8 - Blasting equipment shall be efficient and in good conditions. Compressed air shall be free of oil
and moisture . Air compressors shall be fitted with oil and moisture traps.
2.9 - The salt concentration (chlorides) tested on the cleaned surface shall not exceed 30 mg/m2n
measured per ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9.
3 - PAINTING
3.1 - All paints shall be applied according to manufacturer’s recommendations and instruction with
special regard to mixing, thinning, WFT and DFT, pot life, over-coating interval and ambient conditions.
3.2 - Before painting, ambient conditions shall be checked, in order to verify air and support
temperature, dew point and relative humidity. Painting shall be performed only if support temperature
will be at least 3°C above dew point.
Manufacturer recommendations and instructions included in paints technical data sheets shall be
followed.
3.3 - No painting is allowed if the steel temperature is above 40°C or below 5°C, and relative humidity
above 85%.
3.4 - After primer and before any additional coat, a stripe coat shall be applied on welds, edges, bolt
holes and any other point of difficult access for spraying.
3.5 - Between coats, surface shall be inspected in order to check the presence of moisture, water, oil or
other contaminants. Ambient conditions shall be also checked before and during each coat of paint
application .
3.6 - The repair of defects will follow the methods described below:
3.6.1 - Damage to paint work without exposure of metal surface - The damaged area will be washed
with solvent to remove all contamination, rinsed with fresh water and left dry. The paint adjacent to the
damaged area shall be feathered using a suitable method, to ensure the continuity with the repaired
area and a good mechanical adhesion.
After the surface preparation, the original coating system shall be applied up to the required thickness.
3.6.2 - Damage to paintwork with exposure of metal surface - The damaged area will be cleaned and
re-blasted as originally, and the complete coating system shall be applied in accordance with the
Manufacturer instructions. The repaired area shall be extended at least one inch into the existing paint,
and the edges will be feathered using a suitable method.
4 - EQUIPMENT
4.1 - The equipment used will be such as to give the paint performance specified by the Paint
Manufacturer. All spray equipment may be inspected by the Vendor (and Contractor / Company if
required by applicable Inspection adn Test plan) Representative before the commencement of
operations. All equipment shall be fitted with suitable filters, pressure regulators and gages. Paints
containing heavy or metal pigments with a tendency to decant will be kept in continuous agitation with a
mechanical mixer.
4.2 - All the application parameters of paints, such as mixing ratio, thinner, nozzle pressure, tip size,
etc. , shall be according paint manufacturer technical data sheets. Application techniques shall be
according SSPC Volume 1° - Good Painting Practice.
4.3 - Brush application is allowed in small areas and for touch-up or stripe coat operations. Brushes will
be of such shape and quality as to permit good application of the paint.
5 - INSPECTION
5.1 Vendor (and Contractor / Company if required by applicable Inspection and Test plan) Q.C.
Inspector shall inspect all steps of surface preparation and painting, with special regard to VP-
2025JV0S10063-S-249-101-Q93-004 ITP (IGNITION & CONTROL SKID):
