WHAT IS IT______________________________
Welcome to the new lesson, it is all about the elements or factors to be observed in
planting trees and fruit bearing trees.

ELEMENTS OF PLANTING TREES AND

FRUIT-BEARING TREES

2.0
Here they are:

ON
Choose the best place for planting - Trees and fruit trees require more space for growth

SI
than ornamental plants or crops. This is so because trees and fruit trees grow tall

ER
and wide. There are trees that have roots that expand sideward and those that
move downward.

-V
Choose the seeds that best suit the season and the soil - This means that the seeds
come from a good quality mother and the seeds are healthy, mature with no S
blemishes or cuts, and of the right size and form. Seeds must be prepared before
LE
planting. Planting should be done preferably during rainy season.
DU

Put sufficient fertilizers in the soil - It is advisable to prepare the soil before planting.
This means cleaning the soil and its surrounding area and mixing the soil with
MO

organic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are safe and economical to use while
inorganic fertilizers must be regulated because overuse can poison the soil.
N

Take care of the soil and the plants regularly - Caring for the young trees means
IO

removing the grass and weeds around them so they do not compete in getting the
nutrients from the soil. Keeping the soil always moist is not a problem during rainy
T

season. However, during dry months, there is a need to water them regularly.
RA

Watering is done during sunrise or after sunset to keep evaporation of water from
the soil slow.
E
EN

The following are other elements or factors to be considered in planting trees

tG

and fruit-bearing trees:

1s

1. Climate - it is the most important factor which affects the growth of the trees. It has been
observed that varieties of trees grow best in certain climatic conditions.

2. Temperature - the growth of the plants depends upon the degree of how cold or hot the
atmosphere is at certain period.

3. Sunlight - is the main provider of energy in the process of food manufacture of the
plant.

8
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Subject to further validation for IP compliance, this material is for first quarter use only. Circulation shall be limited to public schools within the jurisdiction of the Division of Cebu Province. LR-PIPCV
4. Rainfall - is especially important in the growth of all kinds of plants and trees. However,
it must be controlled or moderate so as not to flood and drown the growing
trees with water.

5. Soil - the medium for growing in the trees which provides nutrients in plants as it
contains mineral elements necessary for a normal plant growth and
development of the trees.

6. Mineral Soil and organic soil - composed of inorganic substances with varying
amounts of decaying and partly decayed organic matter which would help in

2.0
the growth of plants.

ON
7. Fertilizers - these are added to the soil to increase its productivity. Organic fertilizers
are those who come from compost of decayed fruit and vegetables peelings,

SI
animal manures, and food washing. Inorganic fertilizers are those that are
made up of synthetic materials and are substitute for organic fertilizers.

The following are elements/ factors to observe when planting trees and fruit-bearing
trees:
E
EN

1. Choose the best place for planting. Choose a place where trees will grow freely
without obstruction like street fences or walls. Have enough space allowance
tG

between trees, and between trees and streets, fences, or walls. The type of soil
should be suitable, and the amount of sunlight should be considered too.
1s

2. Choose the seeds that best suit the season and the soil. Seeds must be
prepared before planting. Planting should be done preferably during the rainy
season. The soil must be suited to the type of seeds to be planted.

3. Put sufficient fertilizers in the soil. A rich soil is 40% clay loam, 30% compost,
20% dried carabao manure or chicken dung, and 10% sand. Remember, plants need
nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow and to make them resistant to pests
and diseases.

Subject to further validation for IP compliance, this material is for first quarter use only. Circulation shall be limited to public schools within the jurisdiction of the Division of Cebu Province. LR-PIPCV
4. Take care of the soil and the plants regularly. Make ring cultivation around the
young tree with the size of the ring matching the circumference of the crown of the
tree. The soil in this ring is loose and slightly hilling up. In case of pest or insect
infestation, do this by building a fire and allowing the smoke to penetrate the
foliage. Use the appropriate pesticide or fungicide to control plant disease.

Consult an expert on this. Likewise, prune the young tree by cutting off infected or
unproductive branches. Do not leave excess branches on the trunk to avoid infection which
occurs when the cut has not healed.
