Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is a registered charity dedicated to assisting in developing
countries. More specifically, it is a recruitment agency which finds, selects, and places volunteers in response
to overseas requests. This work makes it distinctive among other charities and organizations in the U.K. It
sends people, not money abroad.
VSO tries to respond to requests from overseas which ask for volunteers. Its bias is firmly towards the
poorest members of the community and it takes great care to avoid undermining job opportunities for local
people.
Both staff and volunteers also pay special attention to women’s roles in developments projects. This is
because women’s roles in child rearing, in education and community cohesion are essential in any healthy
process of change.
Over the past 38 years, more than 21,000 volunteers have worked abroad with VSO. There are now over
1,900 volunteers working in 59 of the less developed countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean.
The application of each volunteer is carefully considered in order to select and interview candidates against
each job request from the field, to seek the person with the right blend of skills and personality. Chosen

It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it. We often value the love and
worth of a friend when he has been taken from us by death more than when he was with us in the flesh; it is
only when we have left school or college that we understand the greatness of our opportunity of education,
which has gone forever; and it is the sick and the ailing who realize the value of good health. When we are
young and strong, we cannot imagine what it is like to be weak and ill. We are so used to vigorous health that
we take it for granted. The organs of our body work so smoothly that we scaredly know we have lungs and
liver, heart and stomach. But when any of these gets upset and gives us pain and sickness, we learn by bitter
experience what an unspeakable blessing it is to be well.
Loss of health makes us miserable, and a burden to ourselves and our friends. It cripples our efforts so that
we cannot accomplish many of the good and great things we might have done. It spoils our life. What must
we do to keep our health.
We must be moderate in eating and drinking and wise in the choice of plain, wholesome simple food.
Gluttony has killed thousands, and strong drink tens of thousands. We must, when young, get plenty of sleep,
which is “nature’s sweet restorer”, and not try to burn the candle at both ends. We must live as much as
possible in the open air and keep our rooms well ventilated. We must get sufficient and regular physical
exercise, and keep our bodies clean. And we must avoid bad habits and secret sins as we avoid the devil, and
keep our thoughts clean and our bodies pur. Our ideal must be the sound mind in the sound body.
1. According to the passage, we often appreciate our friends ______________.
A. only when they are with us. B. only when they are good to us.

A. we are always in good health. B. most of the diseases can be cured nowadays.
C. we are so accustomed to good health. D. we are so busy making a living.
3. Poor health makes us ______________.
A. useless B. unable to fulfill our expectations
C. a shame to our friends D. fail to become famous
4. According to the author, having plenty of sleep when we are young ______________.
A. is wasting our time B. can help us regain our strength
C. may cause loss of health D. can reduce our vigour
5. The best title for the passage is ______________.

Music therapy is using music to help people with a variety of problems. For example, it can help
people with communication and speech problems speak better. It can help people with memory problems
remember things from their past. Music therapy can also help people manage stress and be more relaxed. It
can even make people with bad pain feel better.
In music therapy, a music therapist works with one person alone or with small groups. The therapist
meets with the person and does tests to find out what the problem is and what the person can do with music.
Then the therapist decides what kind of music therapy to use. Some people sing, and others might compose
music, but a person doesn't need to know about music to be helped by music therapy. There are options such
as listening to music and dancing to music. Research shows that these activities are good for the body and for
the mind.
Homes that take care of elderly people often have music therapy programs. The programs help the elderly be
more energetic and also help with memory problems. Some hospitals have music therapy for patients who are
in a lot of pain. Music can affect a part of the brain that reduces pain.
Trevor Gibbons is one example of a person who was helped by music therapy. In 2000, he was putting in

Plastic is a material we use every day. The first plastics were made more than 100 years ago from parts of
plants. Plastics are now made from oil, coal and natural gas. We are using up these things so fast that the
Earth’s supplies may run out. Because of this, scientists are investigating new ideas for making plastics from
plants such as sweet potato, bamboo and flax.
Things made from plastic can be useful for people but bad for the planet. Some plastics can last for a long
time without wearing out, and can be difficult to get rid of when they are not needed. They can remain in
rubbish dumps called landfill sites for hundreds of years. Landfills can be smelly, ugly, and harmful to our
planet.
Recycling is a good way to get rid of unwanted plastics. Recycled waste materials can be used again to
make new products. This can be difficult as different types of plastic need to be recycled in different ways.
Some kinds of plastics can be melted down and used to make new things such as bags and bottles. Others can
be made into fibres (strands of material) for clothing.
Another way to protect the environment is to use canvas bags for shopping rather than plastic ones. A lot of
plastic objects can also be reused. Plastic bottles can be refilled many times, rather than throwing them away
once they are empty. Unwanted plastic goods such as CDs and toys can be sold or given away to charity
shops.

In another study, old people suffering from high blood pressure reported significantly lower blood pressure as
a result of listening to calm music after 30 minutes.
Apart from all those benefits, other effects are related to better sleep, strengthened memory and better

Pollution is any contamination of the environment which causes harm to the environment or
inhabitants of the environment. There are three main kinds of pollution.
Air pollution can be caused by liquids, or gases that make the air harmful to breathe. There are two main types
of air pollution: primary and secondary. Primary pollutants enter the air directly, like smoke from factories and
car exhaust. Secondary pollutants are chemicals that mix together to pollute the air, like mixtures of emissions
from vehicles and factory smoke that change to form more dangerous pollutants in the air and sunlight.
Soil pollution can be caused by pesticides, leakage from chemical tanks, oil spills, and other chemicals
which get into the soil by dumping or accidental contamination. Soil pollution can also cause water pollution
when underground water becomes contaminated by coming into contact with the polluted soil. Water pollution
can be caused by waste products, sewage, oil spills, and litter in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Some
scientists believe that water pollution is the largest cause of death and disease in the world. It causes about
14,000 deaths in the world each day.
It is not possible for anyone to predict the exact timing and effects of global pollution and global

As computers have become powerful tools for rapid and economic of production of picture, computer
graphics has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing fields in computers scienee. It such used routinely in
such diverse areas as business, industry, government, research, training, and madiecine.
One of of the initial uses of computer graphics and ultimately its greatest use, been as an aid to design,
generally referred to as computer – aided degign (CAD). One of its greatest advantages is that designers can
see how an object will lock after construction and make changes freely and much more quickly than with
hands drafting. For three-dimensional rendering of machine parts, engineers rely heavily on CAD.
Automobile, spacecraft, aerospace, and ship designers use CAD techniques to design vehicles and test their
pertomance. Building designs are also created with computer graphics systems. Architect can design a building

THE VANISHING INVENTION
In 1998, a Valencian professor made an amazing claim. Professor Antonio Cervilla discovered how to use
water as a substitute for petrol. The scientist said that you could drive from Bilbao to Valencia on just half a
litre of water. His invention uses a molybdenum compound to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Unlike other methods, no electricity is required and the reaction happens at atmospheric temperature. This
impressive technology is based on the way plant enzymes break down water. The use of molybdenum is the
perfect choice because, although rare, it is cheap and found all around the planet.
10
Since the claims were made, nothing more has been heard about this fabulous technology. There is no
explanation for the disappearance anywhere on the internet, apart from a list of similar inventions which have
also vanished. An inventor from the Philipines called Daniel Dingel developed a water-fuelled car but was
arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison. If this technology were to become widely available, it would

was a type of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton
sold it as a medicine; and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have made people feel good!
11

Asa Candler. Candler was interested, because he had another idea that Pemberton’s “medicine” would be
much better if it was mixed with soda. Candler was thus the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola.
Candler also advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-
Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to
sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the drink, and very quickly the men became
millionaires. The famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed in 1916. And the famous Coca-
Cola logo is the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logos, it has not
changed in 100 years!
During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe began asking for Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola
company began to export to Europe. It was so popular with soldiers that they then had to start bottling the
drink in Europe.

popular drink.
As for the famous formula, it is probably the world’s most valuable secret! The exact ingredients for making
Coca-Cola are only known to a handful of people. And as for the “coca” that was in the original drink, that

cocaine!
