The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was a magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake in the eastern Indian
Ocean on December 26, 2004 (at 00:58 UTC, or 07:58 local time). The earthquake, which had its
epicenter in the sea near the northern coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, caused a series of
tsunami waves that affected the coastal regions of eight Asian countries and caused the death of more
than 120,000 people. This was the fifth strongest earthquake in modern history (since recorded by
seismographs)
