CAT 1 Question and Answers

1. Define Atomic Mass

Ans: Atomic mass of an element is the number of times one atom of the
element is heavier than of a atom. Atomic mass of an element is
represented by a.m.u. (atomic mass unit).

2. Define Molecular mass

Ans: The molecular mass of a substance is the sum of atomic masses of
all the atoms in a molecule of the substance. It is used for those
substances whose constituent particles are molecules.

3. Define Average atomic mass

Ans: The average atomic mass of an element is the sum of the masses of
its isotopes, each multiplied by its natural abundance.

4. Define Relative atomic mass

Ans: The relative atomic mass of an element is defined as the weight in
grams of the number of atoms of the element contained in 12.00 g of
carbon-12.

5. Define Relative molecular mass

Ans: The ratio of the average mass of one molecule of an element or
compound to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12 is called
the relative molecular mass.

6. Define Mole
Ans: The amount of a substance that contains the same number of
elementary particles(ions, molecules, or atoms) as the number of atoms
present in carbon is called the mole. It represents the number of
substances just like dozen represents the 12 quantities of any item.

7. Define Avogadro number

Ans: Avogadro's number tells us the number of particles in 1 mole of a
substance. These particles could be electrons or molecules or atoms.
The value of Avogadro's number is approximately 6.022×1023 mol-1.

8. Define Equivalent mass

Ans: The number of parts by mass, of the element which can displace or
combine with 1.008 parts by mass of hydrogen or 8 parts by mass of
oxygen or 35.5 parts by mass of chlorine is known as equivalent mass.

9. Define Gram equivalent mass

Ans: We can define gram equivalent mass as the mass of one mole of
element, ion, molecule divided by their electrons shared or their
valences. Gram equivalent mass is generally defined for metals or salts
or ions or for the compounds/atoms/molecules which have the ability to
form ions.

10. Define Empirical formula

Ans: The empirical formula is the simplest formula for a compound
which is defined as the ratio of subscripts of the smallest possible whole
number of the elements present in the formula.

11. Define Molecular formula

Ans: Molecular formula is the actual number of atoms of each element
in a compound. It also indicates the kinds of atoms. Molecular formula
is the actual number of atoms of each element in a compound. It also
