Institutional

Financial Aid
2004-2005

Brought to you courtesy of:

ADVISORY
This booklet provides the public with information on available institutional financial aid programs at Chaminade University of
Honolulu. The reader is advised that while these programs exist, not all may elect to offer funding every year. For example, certain
funded scholarship programs, newly created, may still be in the process of building up the fund base before electing to provide any
scholarship awards to eligible students. Furthermore, even in situations when program funds have been designated for
distribution, sufficient levels of funding may not be available to accommodate all eligible students. Lastly, the contents of this
booklet are offered as a "guide," and do not necessarily reflect all of the conditions related to the eligibility criteria of each
institutional aid program. In cases when there is a question as the interpretation of certain eligibility requirements and the
purposes of each program, Chaminade University of Honolulu reserves the right to clarify any such issues.

About this booklet

"It's almost as certain as death and taxes," a disgruntled student once was heard to say. He was commenting on how the annual
rise in college educational costs had seemingly become one of life's accustomed facts. Well, as much as college tuition always seems
to increase, what should also be taken into account is the extent to which a school provides financial assistance (to deserving
students) from its own coffers. Commonly referred to as "Institutional Aid," these assistance programs reflect, in part, the school's
commitment to its own mission. In effect, the school invests in itself by providing much needed financial support to its own
eligible students, from funds allocated within its own operational budget, or generously donated by private contributors. At
Chaminade University of Honolulu, to help deserving students cope with the ever increasing rise in college tuition, we have
established a number of institutional financial aid programs which we actively administer every year. While no one student can
ever be guaranteed institutional aid (since most must qualify through a combination of merit and need), our commitment to
providing our students with significant amounts of assistance remains strong and clear. In 2004-2005, our average institutional
discounted aid to new students entering Chaminade was targeted at over $4,600.00.1 Hence, when considering the extent of our
institutional commitment, it can be said that when students evaluate how much it will cost to attend Chaminade, they should
judge us not by what we charge, but by what they will actually pay! There is a difference! To fulfill our commitment, we have
established a myriad of grants and scholarships over the years. So much so, that it became apparent we needed to compile all of
the pertinent information about these programs into one handy booklet, which all interested parties, especially students, could use
to learn more about Chaminade's institutional aid program. This booklet serves to address this need. It describes every grant and
scholarship program available, and the qualifications necessary to apply.2 I hope it will help you. If after reading this you should
have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 808.735.4780, and we will be more than happy to help you. You can

Non-Funded Programs
"Non-funded Programs" refers to institutional assistance that serves to reduce a student's charges at Chaminade. There are no
actual funds within any non-funded program account. Instead, these programs serve as credits against the costs charged by
Chaminade. The amount allocated to any of these program accounts is determined annually by the institution. There are basically
four types of non-funded programs: tuition reductions, institutional grants and scholarships, special programs, and athletic
scholarships.

Tuition Reductions
Chaminade offers a variety of tuition reduction options that act to reduce a student's tuition by a certain percentage if certain
criteria are met. In particular, percentage reductions are offered to students: whose parents are employees of Chaminade; who have
a sibling also attending Chaminade; who make early tuition payments; and who are members of a religious order. Tuition
Reductions are afforded specifically to students who meet the specific criteria for each type of reduction. They are not based on
need.

Institutional Grants and Scholarships

Chaminade offers a variety of grants and scholarships that are awarded to eligible students based on both academic merit and
financial need. Scholarship amounts vary according to the criteria of the scholarship type. However, being "non-funded" in
nature, these grants and scholarships gain value only as they are applied against any institutional charges levied on the student.
Therefore, students cannot receive more discounted aid than what their Chaminade charges total up to be. As these awards are
contingent on either merit or need (or both), these awards may vary from year to year.

Special Programs
These are additional Chaminade scholarships or tuition discounts that are usually provided in conjunction with some other
agency, school, organization, and/or require some additional requirements or tasks on the part of the applicant.

Athletic Scholarships
Chaminade fields intercollegiate teams in the following sports: men's basketball, women's volleyball, women's softball, men's
water polo, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's cross country, and men's cross country.

Major sports, such as basketball and volleyball, provide maximum scholarships covering all costs owed to the school (i.e. tuition,
room and board). The other sports offer lesser amounts which vary depending upon the team's scholarship budget. Scholarship
eligibility is contingent upon the student making the team and passing NCAA academic requirements. Specific Award amounts
are determined by the CUH Athletic Department and in particular, the head coach of each sport. The following is a description of
Chaminade's non-funded aid programs, categorized in terms of tuition reductions, institutional grants and scholarships, and
athletic scholarships.

recognize the leadership "potential" of all students, even though their grades may not be especially high. This was in the spirit of Father
Chaminade, for which the school is named. Students who received the previously named "Basic Grant" and who meet continuing

What happens when. . . ?

What happens when a student receives more than one non-funded form of aid?

Since Chaminade offers a variety of non-funded forms of aid, it is not uncommon for students to qualify for more than one form
of institutional award. However, as individual award programs have been established throughout the years independent from one
another, and often times with different eligibility criteria, it is important to understand that qualifying for multiple forms of non-
funded aid does not necessarily mean that the recipient will receive the full value of each individual award.

Depending upon the kinds of awards involved, non-funded forms of aid may either be awarded in conjunction with one another
(i.e. each individual form of aid awarded in its full value), or may be reconciled with one another (i.e. adjusted so that the student
receives a total award value equivalent to the highest award for which the student is deemed eligible, but not the full value of
each). To fully understand how Chaminade will treat the combination of prospective awards, the following concepts are provided:

Non-funded aid cannot exceed the student's total charges

"Non-funded" institutional aid gains value only as long as there are charges to which the award can be credited. These forms
of assistance are intended to help deserving students reduce their costs, not to reimburse them for other non-institutional
costs. If a student receives multiple forms of non-funded aid which then exceed the actual charges owed to Chaminade, the
Financial Aid Office will revise one or more awards to ensure that the total value of the awards is no greater than what the
student owes to Chaminade.

This pertains to new, first time students, since the majority of the non-funded grants and scholarships are directed toward
these students. It does not apply to transfer students. The specific types of awards that these students are eligible to receive
involve only the Transfer Grant and Need Based Grant.

This is not to suggest that the students cannot receive forms of financial aid back in cash from other sources of financial aid
once institutional charges are paid off. For example, a student with their full charges covered with a form of non-funded aid,
such as full athletic scholarship, may still qualify for a Federal Pell Grant (to which he or she may be entitled), which would
then be returned to the student in the form of acutal cash paid. What happens when. . . ?

Reconciliation of aid affects primarily institutional grants and scholarships

Reconciling of multiple forms of aid primarily affects the institutional grants and scholarships. For the most part, when students
qualify for either tuition reductions or athletic scholarships, they will receive the full value of what they have been awarded (even if
they also are receiving any of the institutional grants or scholarships), unless the total value of their non-funded assistance cannot
exceed what they owe to Chaminade. However, with all institutional grants and scholarships, a reconciliation of all types of aid
awarded will be performed, and the total amount of institutional aid that the student is provided will be equivalent to the highest
award he or she is eligible to receive.

Reconciling of institutional grants and scholarships will follow a sequential order

When a student receives multiple forms of institutional grants or scholarships, a certain order will be followed to affect any
reconciliation or reduction of aid offered. In essence, the lowest (in terms of award value) forms of aid will generally be held intact,
while the higher awards will be adjusted. The general sequence of reconciliation (with later forms of aid being adjusted in favor of
earlier ones) will be as follows:

1. CUH Hawai'i Grant

2. CUH Regents Scholarship, or CUH Presidential Scholarship, or
CUH Leadership Scholarship or CUH Father Chaminade Scholarship
3. CUH Need-based Grant
4. CUH Parish Scholarship or CUH Catholic Scholarship
5. CUH ROTC Scholarship
6. CUH Marianist Leadership Scholarship
7. CUH Science Fair Scholarship

39
What happens when. . .? examples

To illustrate this point a few examples are in order:

Example Number 1
Say a student is the recipient of a Regents Scholarship of $6,000, but also happens to be eligible for the CUH Hawai'i Grant of
$3,000. Because of the student's eligibility for the lower valued grant, the Regents Scholarship will be reduced to a value of
$3,000. The student is still afforded the original $6,000 total value (of the higher Regents Scholarship), but, since the Hawai'i
Grant is automatically based on their having either graduated from a local high school or community college, the Regents is
reduced accordingly.

Example Number 2
A student receiving a CUH Parish Scholarship, valued at $6,925, who happens to also be eligible for the CUH Presidential
Scholarship of $4,500, will be eligible for $2,425 in the Parish Scholarship for the academic year. Again, when totaling all of these
awards, the total institutional award amount is $6,925.

Example Number 3
A student receiving the CUH Science Fair Scholarship ($8,500), CUH Regents Scholarship ($6,000), who also qualifies for the
Hawai'i Grant ($3,000), and who happens to be a recipient of a ROTC Scholarship ($1,000), will have a total award package
valued at $8,500. It would be distributed in the following manner: Hawai'i Grant for $3,000, Regents Scholarship for $3,000,
ROTC Scholarship for $1,000, and the Science Fair Scholarship for $1,500.

Exception for the need nased grant

One exception to the previous concept must be understood. CUH Need Based Grants, because they are awarded primarily on
need and not merit, may be replaced entirely if the student qualifies for a type of institutional merit scholarship which is greater in
total value. For example, if a student was originally awarded a Presidential Scholarship of $4,500, and a Need Based Grant of
$500, but then receives a Marianist Leadership Scholarship valued at $10,387; the Need Based Grant would be rescinded entirely,
and replaced with a Marianist Leadership Scholarship of $5,887. The "Need Grant," originally offered because the Financial Aid
Office determined that the student demonstrated sufficient need to warrant this award, is basically rendered moot when the higher
Marianist scholarship is awarded which obviously covers the same amount of need and more.

40
Funded Programs

Funded Programs
"Funded Programs" refer to institutional financial aid programs that are composed of actual funds, awarded to eligible students.
These funds are financed primarily by the contributions of private donors, and recipients are selected according to the eligibility
criteria set forth by the donor by the sponsors themselves, the Chaminade University Scholarship Committee, or the Chaminade
Financial Aid Office. Since these awards reflect actual monies available to the institution to award deserving students, these awards
are not restricted (in terms of maximum awards) to the charges owed to the school (as is the case with non-funded programs).
Annual award amounts vary each year depending on the amount of funds available. However, awards generally range from $500
to $2,000, although exceptions to these amounts can be granted. There are two types of funded programs: Endowed Scholarships
and Restricted Scholarships.

Endowed Scholarships
Endowed Scholarships reflect scholarship funds developed through contributions of private donors. Chaminade generally utilizes
the earnings made off of the donated principal to provide annual awards to eligible students. Use of the principal to provide
scholarship awards may be allowed, provided awards are made according to the specific criteria specified by the donor.

Restricted Scholarships
Restricted Scholarships reflect scholarship funds which are provided to Chaminade through the contribution of private donors,
but for which Chaminade may expend both the original gift (of the donor), as well as any attributed earnings, in awarding to
eligible students. Although these scholarships are open to all students who should meet the eligibility criteria, preference is given
to continuing (i.e., non-first-time) Chaminade undergraduate students.

A description of Chaminade's funded aid programs categorized in terms of both endowed and restricted scholarships follows.

This is a faculty and staff committee that is comprised of three faculty members, and a member of the Financial Aid Office.

Outside Scholarships

Outside Scholarships
As an added service to our readers, we provide a listing of scholarships that our office has become aware of over the years.
Chaminade does NOT administer these "Outside Scholarships". Instead, they are programs offered up by private scholarship
agencies, organizations, and clubs. They run the gamut of small, local (i.e. Hawaii based) scholarships that provide opportunities
for Hawaii students, to large, national programs available to anyone in the United States. Annual scholarship awards may vary
from amounts in the hundreds of dollars, to those totaling many thousands. What follows reflects the latest information that our
office had on file at the time of this printing, and may not necessarily be the most current information about the program. Readers
are recommended to consult with the scholarship donor to confirm what is listed and to request any updated information before
applying.
