Biology Exam Written Response

Use the following information to answer the next question
The solutions in the arms of the U-tube (below) are separated by a selectively permeable
membrane that is permeable to water and solute A, but not to solute B. 40g of solute A and 20g
of solute B have been added to the water on side 1 of the U-tube. 20g of solute A and 40g of
solute B have been added to the water on side 2 of the U-tube. Assume that after a period of
time, equilibrium is reached.

1. Answer the questions below:

a. How many grams of solute A will be each side of the U-Tube?

b. How many grams of solute B will be each side of the U-Tube?

c. What will happen to the water level in the U-Tube? Explain your answer.

d. What is the concentration relationship from side 1 and side 2 of the U-Tube?
Use the following information to answer the next question
Consider the diagram of a cell membrane below

2. Answer the following questions below:

a. There is a higher concentration of a small hydrophobic molecules in the extracellular

environment than in the intracellular environment. Draw one arrow on the diagram above to
show the pathway taken by the small hydrophobic molecule across the plasma membrane.
Below, justify the pathway you have taken.

b. One of the molecules – Molecule R, Molecule S, Molecule T or Molecule U – has one

responsibility of being an attachment site for messenger molecules. Circle the molecule below
that the question is referring to:

Molecule R Molecule S Molecule T Molecule U

c. Name the organelle within a cell where the molecule circled in part b. is synthesized.

d. If the membrane above is subject to very high temperatures, the membrane can become too fluid.
Circle the molecule below that can retain the rigidity of the membrane if it becomes too fluid.

Molecule R Molecule S Molecule T Molecule U
