Prince Paul Anton Esterhazy


Birth and Death: 11th March 1786 - 21st May 1866

Where: Hungary

He was ‘intensely musical’ and played cello, viola de gamba and the baryton. (‘The baryton is a
bowed string instrument similar to the viol, but distinguished by an extra set of sympathetic but also
pluckable strings. It was in regular use in Europe until the end of the 18th century.’)

He was patron to Haydn, who was employed by him for 30 years

Symphonies: Symphony No. 6 in D major, "Le Matin";


Symphony No. 7 in C major, "Le Midi";
Symphony No. 8 in G major, "Le Soir."

Opera: He composed his first opera, "Acide e Galatea," his first opera
String Quartets: composed several string quartets that aren’t well known but they are
some of his earlier ones
Keyboard Music: sonatas and keyboard trios, none of which are particularly
well-known.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria

While he himself was not a musician or composer, he had a deep appreciation for music, and especially
for Wagner's music.

Patron to Richard Wagner for about 20 years.

“Tristan und Isolde": considered one of Wagner's masterpieces. Ludwig provided


financial support for the composition and production of this opera.
"Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" ("The Mastersingers of Nuremberg"): comic
opera, "Parsifal": Wagner's final opera, "Parsifal," received support from King Ludwig
II, and it premiered at Ludwig's Bayreuth Festspielhaus, a theater built specifically for
Wagner's works.
