Abstract

Nowadays Facebook is the most commonly used online social media in Bangladesh as well as all
over the world. The need to spend more time on Facebook is increasing among university
students. On the other hand, importance of spending quality time with family is avoided by them.
This study was aimed to show the difference between how much time university students spend
on Facebook and how much with their families. They also expressed their opinion on how using
Facebook is affecting their family life. This survey was conducted on 3 students of East West
University. All the participants were below 22 years old. 2 of them are from Computer Science
and Engineering department and 1 of them is from Department of Business Studies. There were
many similarities and dissimilarities between their opinions.

1
Introduction

Facebook is a social networking website and service where users can post comments, share
photographs and links to news or other interesting content on the Web, play games, chat live, and
stream live video. Facebook began in February of 2004 as a school-based social network at
Harvard University. It was created by Mark Zuckerberg along with Edward Saverin, both
students at the college ( Lifewire).

Like many other countries in this world, Facebook is doing a very good job at communication
sectors in Bangladesh also. In Bangladesh people of all ages are using Facebook but our
university students, teenagers spend a lot of time in using Facebook. No doubt that it is making
us digitalized and technological. Also the adaptation of technologies is different for different
aged people.

Family is an social organization where the members live together with a legal relationship and
connected to each other by the bond of blood. A child born and grows up. Family develops our
ethical, social and political foundation. When families do not have a lot of time to spend
together, the quality of time and the activities become important.

The main aim to this study is to show the difference between how much time our university
students spend on social media and how much with their families. Our research question was
“How the students of our university spend time on facebook and how with family, If spending
time on Facebook is affecting the social life of our university students or not, and how it is
creating an effect”. The study will also make an analysis if using Facebook is creating a bad
impact on their family or social life. This study will also convey if using Facebook is making
them more social or not. Secondly, the methodology used to collect the data will be described
followed by the findings section. The limitations section will reveal what kind of conflicts we
faced while conducting the research and the recommendation section is also used to overcome
the limitations.

Literature Review

There can be numerous studies on the amount of time spending on Facebook of university
students in different countries. A number of them are given below:

Addictive Facebook Use among University Students:

This study was conducted by Zeinab, Bahaman, Siti Zobaidah ,Jusang and Nurul Akhter in 2014.
It was aimed to explore the phenomenon of Facebook addiction among university students.
Qualitative study using interview is used to gather data from nine International postgraduates of
Universiti Putra Malaysia and the data established three themes (Compulsion to check Facebook,
High frequency use, and Using Facebook to avoid offline responsibility) relied on the
participants interviews (Zeinab, Bahaman, Siti Zobaidah ,Jusang and Nurul Akhter in 2014) .

How Do University Students Spend Their Time On Facebook? An

Exploratory Study:

This study was conducted by AlimohammadAghazamaniin 2010. It was aimed to determine

student motives for using Facebook. The study showed that using Facebook can be seen as an
important part of daily life among University students and its phenomenon spread out inevitably
(AlimohammadAghazamaniin 2010) .

In our research paper we have conducted quantitative research. There are some analogy between
our research and the above mentioned researches. We determined how Facebook is creating a
bad effect on our social life and what percentage of university students are addicted to Facebook.

3
In this research we have also collected the data on how much time students spend on Facebook
and how much with their families.

Methodology

According to dissertation help service “Research Methodology is a way to find out the result of a
given problem on a specific matter or problem that is also referred as research problem.” In
Methodology, researcher uses different criteria for solving the given research problem. In this
research paper we used quantitative method. This is a surveybased study. The study population
consisted of the students of East West University. We selected seven (3) students, 2 of them were
from Computer science and Engineering Department and 1 of them was from Department of
Business Studies. The age of 2 students were 21 and the age of 1 was 20. We served them some
questions. Based on their responses we made an analysis on their time spending nature, why they
are prone to spend more time on Facebook rather than spending more time with their families.
We also made our remarks on how the Facebook addiction is hampering our social life.

4
Findings

We have conducted our survey on 3 students. The results along with their explanations are given
below:

There were 7 questions. At first we asked them how many Facebook account each of them has. 2
of them responded that they have only 1 account and 1 of them responded that he had more than
1 account. This indicates that most of them feel comfortable having only one account.

Secondly, we focused on their quantity of spending time on Facebook. 1 of the students

responded that he spends 3 hours in Facebook per day. Spending this huge amount of time in
Facebook gives him less time to spend with his family. This can also create a bad impact on his
academic performances.

Thirdly, we asked them how often they check notifications on Facebook. 2 of the students like to
check notifications after 15 minutes intervals. 1 of them like to check notifications after 5
minutes intervals. This reveals that most of the day they thinks about checking notifications, how
many likes they got in their posts and how many people puts comments on their status. Spending
most of the time on thinking notifications, the students cannot think about their families. Thus
they do not feel the need to talk with their family members which making the family bonds
weak.

while responding the fourth question, 2 of the participants answered that they like to spend more
time on Facebook rather than with their families while they are at home. The addiction to
Facebook is making the family less important to our university students. It reveals that the
students are addicted in social interactions.
5
Now we asked them if their Facebook friends can understand more than their family members.
All of them responded that their Facebook friends cannot understand them in the way that their
family members. So our students are spending time on those peoples who are not reliable and
cannot become as close as family members.

After that, all of the students agreed that using Facebook is making their family bonding weak.

Lastly, we asked them if they think that spending more time on Facebook can make them more
social or not. All of them think that spending time on Facebook cannot make them more social. It
has just become an addiction to them. It tells us that this social media cannot make us that social.

From the results, we can come to the point that Facebook is making our students less social.
Students are spending times on whom he/she less knows. Spending a lot of time on Facebook is
making our family bonding weak. This can create a bad impact on pour social and family life.

6
Limitations

Only the students of East West University participated in this survey. Because of data limitations
and the short period of time we were not able to collect as much data as we wanted at least. While
taking survey many students showed their unwillingness to participate on the survey, this type of
drawbacks put us in data limitations.

7
Recommendations
If students from other universities may participate on this research we could have get different
views. Having an experience on the field of primary data collection may help to collect the
desired amount of data. More amount of time can help to make the research proper. Sufficient
amount of time could give us the opportunity to conduct the research without any complications.
Cooperative mentality of the survey participants could make the research accurate and could
extend its value.

Conclusion

8
The importance of social media sites specially, Facebook is undeniable. But the addiction
towards Facebook is creating a wall between us and our family members. In this research we
showed that how social media is creating a distance between the addictive user and the society. If
we want to get rid of this problem we have to be cautious while using social media sites. Proper
guidance on children by their parents can be a good solution to stop this problem.
