PLATIC SURGERY: ANIMATION

1. How do you feel about the video?

When I watched the animation video regarding plastic surgery, I was amazed by how
people can literally change every part of them through technological advancements. But
as the animation went on, I felt scared; it is terrifying how plastic surgery, which is
supposed to enhance one’s beauty will eventually be the reason for one’s destruction at
some point, physically and mentally.

2. To what extent you are influenced by your culture and the social media as to how you
view yourself?
Culture and social media have set standards on how people, specifically women, should
be like. These standards include the facial features, weight, height, and everything
which according to society is ‘beautiful’. And as a member of society, I have seen these
standards being compared to me and honestly, I cannot deny that I am affected by it. It
makes me very self-conscious; I feel like my body and facial features doesn’t look good. I
am influenced by culture and social media to the extent that using filters and make up is
a necessity to avoid being judged.

3. If you are given an opportunity, would you change your body? Why?
If I were given an opportunity to change myself, I wouldn’t. The reason for this is that I
believe my flaws makes me who I am, and I love myself the way it is; I don’t need to
follow society’s standards. I always keep in mind what Hwasa, a Korean singer said, “If I
don’t fit in this generation’s standard of beauty, then I’ll become a new standard.”

4. What are your insights about it?

I believe plastic surgery is not entirely bad nor good. Plastic surgery, for others may be
their last resort to end their struggle on being body-shamed and bullied. If you think
plastic surgery can make you more confident and beautiful, it’s your body, do whatever
you want with it, but take time to consider the possible consequences. But as for me,
everyone should stop listening to others’ opinion regarding our body and face. We are
humans, we weren’t meant to be perfect, but we are all beautiful in our own ways.
A REFLECTION PAPER:

ON BEING BEAUTIFUL

“I am beautiful no matter what they say; words can’t bring me down.” Society has set
unreachable beauty standards causing people to deal with unending insults and criticisms.
Christina Marie Aguillera, a singer and song writer who has been named as the Voice of a
Generation, released the song “Beautiful” which discusses inner beauty, self-esteem, and
insecurity.

The song discusses one’s experiences on being regarded as not pretty. People, who are
supposed to cheer and support each other, are mostly the cause of our insecurities. We
become self-conscious by continuously being compared to their standard of beautiful. We even
become ashamed to the point that without make up or filters, we are not confident. But the
song strong emphasized self-love and self-esteem. “Words can’t bring me down,” this line from
the song encourages us to not listen to what other people say regarding our looks and just
appreciate the beauty that is already within us. We do not have to comply to the standards
they have set, we do not have to undergo plastic surgery just to meet those criteria. We just
have to be ourselves because we are beautiful in every single way.
