EVOLUTION
• One misconception is
that organisms
evolve, in the
Darwinian sense,
during their lifetimes
• Natural selection acts
on individuals, but
only populations
evolve

Legal Measures
• Declaration of Protected Areas(PA’s); 234 (5mha) as of
2008
• Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA’s)
• *PA’s cover only 51% of terrestrial KBA’s
• Establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s); 1169
existing and 164 proposed as of 2008
• Ecotourism
• Environmental law enforcement and green courts

Where are we headed?
A burgeoning human population. The Philippines
has thus been pegged as a top conservation
“hotspot’ for terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and
there are fears that it could be the site of the first
major extinction spasm (Heaney and Mittermeier
1997; Myers et al. 2000;Roberts et al.2002).
Remarkably, and despite this precarious situation,
there is evidence that hope exists for biodiversity
conservation in the Philippines.
