Characteristics
Revisionof a Force
A force is characterized by its:
1- Point of application: Center of a body, point of contact.
2- Line of action: vertical, horizontal, oblique.
3- Direction: to the left, right, upward, downward, upward to the left…..
4- Magnitude: amount of the force expressed in Newton (N) in S.I
Magnitude of a Force
Magnitude of a Force
To measure the magnitude of a force, a spring balance is used.
Spring Balance
The spring balance consists of a spring
with a hook at the bottom that can be
pulled down slowly.
Spring balance has a scale
By LFO/SLP-Technical Team
By LFO/SLP-Technical Team
The hook is pulled down.
- The pointer of the spring balance moves
from zero to a value.
- The reading of the spring balance
multiplied by the scale ,is the magnitude of
the force.

Example
The magnitude of the force F is measured by means of the spring balance
as shown in the figure . Find the magnitude of the force F
Answer :
F = 40 x 0.1 = 4 N

Representation of a Force
A force is represented by a force vector
To represent a force we have to

Example 1
A force of magnitude 40 N is applied on a point A , horizontal to right .
Represent the force using the scale 1cm 10 N

Example 2
A force of magnitude 9N is applied on a point B vertically downward .
Represent the force using the scale 1cm 3 N

Exercise 3 :
Sami applies a force on the ball which is directed toward his
head using his hand. The applied force of magnitude 60 N and
is applied up to right at point E .
Represent the force applied by Sami using the
scale : 1cm 30 N

Exercise 4 :
The magnet attracts the iron ball by a force of magnitude 10 N horizontal to left. The
point of application of this force is the center of gravity of the ball.
Exercise 5 :
Sam exerts a force on the box to move it. The force is
represented by 3 cm using the scale : 1cm 10 N
1- Find the magnitude of the force F
2- Give the characteristics of the force F

Exercise 6:
The spring in the adjacent figure exerts a force on the body
S.The exerted force by the spring at point B is vertically
upward of magnitude 30 N.
Represent the force exerted by the spring on the body S using
the scale : 1cm 6N
