WHAT HAPPENED

Listening, like speaking, is a skill that you can learn and

practice. When you really listen, you pay attention and think
about what you are hearing.

Kinds of Listening

1. Listening for information – your purpose is to increase your

knowledge about a certain topic. When your teacher
presents new material, for example, you should listen for
information.
2. Critical Listening – when you are listening to decide
whether to accept or reject what you are being told. In
listening to a campaign speech, for instance, you need to
decide whether the speaker should be elected.
3. Conversational Listening – when you listen to a friend on
the way home from school, your purpose may be neither to
gain specific information nor to make judgment. However,
you do want to understand what is being said and to
respond appropriately.

Active Listening - it means paying attention and thinking

about what you are hearing. Active listeners weigh and
evaluate information.

Passive Listening – involves little effort at understanding.

Passive listeners allow their minds to wander and hear only
part of what is said.

6|P age

Purpose

for a statement that tells the
speaker’s purpose. The speaker

C. Read the following paragraphs carefully. Then write I if the author’s
purpose is to Inform, P if to Persuade and E if to Entertain.

_________ 1. Like the ocean of water, the ocean of air knows no stillness.
It is forever in a ceaseless motion. Though there may not be enough
wind to move a feather, the air is forever in motion. The whole
atmosphere is a big and complex system of air currents and each lesser
portion of air has its own lesser circulation. One cannot lift his hand
without causing a tiny breeze, neither can one turn without producing
a minute whirlwind. This is because every separate air movement draws
other movements in its train.

_________ 2. I want you to visit our cornfield and experience its scenery.
The soil is hot and dry; the wind comes across the lazily murmuring
leaves full of warm smell drawn from rapidly growing corn. A flood of
blinding object drops upon the field over which the cool shadows run
only to make the heat of the sun more intense.

_________ 3. I guess you want to hear why I have a beautiful and fit body.
It is because I have a regular exercise schedule that helps me stay in
shape. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I jog. I start warming
up with calm, easy stretching exercises. Then I usually run for about
twenty-five minutes, and I cover about three kilometers during that
time. After running, I always cool down by doing stretching exercises.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I lift weights. I save weekends for relaxing.
The days in between give my muscles a chance to recover from the
strain.

_________ 4. You must study about Glaciers. They are great masses of
ice formed by snow. Snow collects on mountains for years then melts
and freezes. Each new snowfall supplies ice for the glacier as it packs,
melts and freezes again. Glaciers change the earth by pushing and
moving rocks, soil, and even huge boulders. The rocks and boulders
that are pushed along by a glacier cut into the soil and wear away stone.

_________ 5. The Philippines has many folk festivals. The Ati-Atihan
festival in Aklan, which commemorates the historic sale of Panay and
recalls the peace pact between the Negritos and the Malays who settled
in Aklan, is one of them. Townspeople and their guests paint their faces
and wear colorful costumes as they dance the streets of Kalibo. A
Sunday evening procession in honor of the Sto. Niño brings a solemn
end to the week of gaiety.

D. Read the text below and answer the following questions.

Philippine Heritage is evidence of our

cultural history and development. It reflects
our shared values and a tangible proof of
Filipino excellence and creativity. A Filipino
society that values and preserves its cultural
heritage instils pride of place and strengthens
Philippine national identity.
