Summary report
Of
Ground Rods Measurements

 Problem Define

High ground rods resistances have recorded in allover the plant locations during the regular preventive maintenance
activities.

An overall survey for earthing system rods in plant and supporting areas has established during Feb- Mar 2023.
The tests were conducted using clamp-on Megger DET24C for each rod individually.

 Findings

The upcoming results (in below Tables) revealed a dire situation in almost 70% of total rod number, While 10% of rods
are in questionable situation, the reminting 20% are identified functional.

To confirm rods deterioration problem, resistivity of the soil was tested at Telecom Building area that suffers from high
earthing resistance. In which the three tested points read ρ (21 Ωm , 55 Ωm & 50 Ωm ) satisfactory.
Also, a selected rod with bad reading was exposed for a physical inspection, and it has observed a high rate of corrosion
that broke and deteriorated the rod severely.

Generally, It’s worth mentioning that resistance of the plant integral grid is <1 Ω.

2) TESTING PROCEDURE GUIDELINES

A) FALL-OF-POTENTIAL (3 POLE )METHOD:

 Distance between electrode and current rod D=15 m

 Distance between electrode and voltage rod:
Z(R1) = 9.0 m
Z(R2) = 7.5 m
Z(R3) = 6.0m
 Testing frequency = 128 Hz
 Testing voltage = 50 v
B) SOIL RESISTIVITY TESTING.

 Distance between electrodes A= 4m

 Depth of electrode B=20 cm
 Average earth resistivity to a depth of 4 m is equivalent to (A) distance between the
electrodes.
 Depth (B) is 1/20 distance between the electrodes .
