Devil Facial Tumour Disease

A Closer Look At Why These Animals Are Endangered

Jack McKinnon, 1 September 2021

What Is This Odd Tumour?
The Tasmanian Devil is a beautiful mammal with a unique lifestyle
and history. These animals are really endangered, and are almost
extinct. They only inhabit Tasmania, but that’s not why they’re
endangered. There’s more to this. A sickness made this mammal in
great danger, and it’s name is : Devil Facial Tumour Disease. A
facial tumour that can kill this beautiful mammal in less then seven
months.

The Side Effects Of This
The tumour is an infectious disease, and is usually spread by Devils
sharing food and mating. Once the sickness is inside it’s body, red,
pimple-looking spots appear on its face, and kills the devil by organ
failure, or worse infection. But this isn’t the only way Devils are
dying.

Killer Cars
Yes, I know, this subheading isn’t what you’re looking for, but cars
are actually a big threat to the Tasmanian Devil. At night, or even in
the day, Tasmanian Devils cross roads, unaware of the killing
machines ahead of them. Then, a car would smash into them, making
them instantly die. This isn’t something you’d like to imagine, so
drive carefully and follow the road rules!

How We Can Help

There are lots of donations available to help zoos such as:

Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Zoo, and
more. Once you do this, all the foundations that are being donated
can help scientists - and zookeepers, to find a stop to this. We can
make this Devil strive again!
