Problem Set 4

Q1 2 kg of oxygen fills the cylinder of a piston-cylinder assembly. The initial volume and
pressure are 2 m3 and 1 bar, respectively. Heat transfer to the oxygen occurs at constant pressure
until the volume is doubled. Determine the heat transfer for the process, in kJ, assuming the
specific heat ratio is constant, k = 1.35. Kinetic and potential energy effects can be ignored.
(771.2 kJ)

Q2 Five kg of oxygen initially at 430∘C, fills a closed, rigid tank. Heat transfer from the oxygen
occurs at the rate of 425 W for 30 minutes. Assuming the ideal gas model with k = 1.350 for the
oxygen, determine its final temperature in deg C. (223.9∘C)

Q3 One kg of air undergoes a cycle consisting of the following processes.

Process 1-2: Constant pressure expansion with p = 1.4 bar from T = 278 K to v2 = 1.4v1.
Process 2-3: Adiabatic compression to v3 = v1 and T3 = 450 K.
Process 3-1: Constant-volume process.

Sketch the cycle on a carefully labelled p-v diagram. Assuming ideal gas behaviour determine
the energy transfers by heat and work for each process in kJ. Assume the ideal gas model and
consider average specific heat values for calculations.

Q4 One kg of oxygen undergoes a power cycle consisting of the following processes.

Process 1-2: Constant volume heating from p1 = 1.4 bar, T1 = 280K to T2 = 460K.
Process 2-3: Adiabatic expansion to v3 = 1.429v2
Process 3-1: Constant pressure compression to state 1.
Sketch the cycle on a p-v diagram. Assuming ideal gas behaviour, determine (a) the pressure at
state 2, in bar, (b) the temperature at state 3 in K. (c) the heat transfer and work, each in kJ, for
all processes and (d) the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
