Present continuous

We use the present continuous to talk about:
Activities at the moment of speaking

Plans (arrangements have been made)

Temporary states which are true around the moment


of speaking
Main information
We use verbs with ING
We use : now, right now, just now, at the moment,
today.
we use verb to be AM/IS/ARE
Rules in the present continuous
If the verb ends in "e", we eliminate the "e" and add "ING"
LIVE - LIVING
DRIVE - DRIVING
If the verb ends in "ie", we replace it with "y" and add "ING"
DIE - DYING
LIE - LYING
If the verb is a single syllable and ends in C+V+C, we double the last
consonant and add "ING"
RUN - RUNNING
SWIM - SWIMMING
Any verb that ends in "w" or "y" only adds "ING"
Verbs that do not comply with any previous rule simply add "ING"
Stative verbs
We do not normally use the continuous with stative verbs.
Stative verbs include:
verbs of thinking and feeling:

believe dislike know like


love hate remember understand want wish

verbs of the senses:

appear feel seem smell


sound taste
Structure
(+) Subject + to be + verb + ING + complement
She is running around the park right now.
Harry is studying for his exam.

(-) Subject + to be + not + verb + ING + complement


They are not eating the dinner.
I'm not reading this book today.

(?) To be + subject + verb + ING + complement + ?


Are you working now? yes, I’m working now.
Is she drinking a beer? No, she is not drinking.
WH- question
WH-questions are formed by moving the verb BE, and then
adding the WH- word.
WH- word + to be + subject + verb +
ING + complement + ?

What is he eating?
Why are you crying?
Where is he going?
When is she leaving?
