CASTILLO Y RADA.
Thank you to coming here to make this act symbolic, today we celebrate 40 years of
anniversary of the ship a long time has passed but she still operative because of the crew,
who is the most important thing on board, people that haves this senses of caring to the
ship, and they have supported the extension of life of the Unit.
Well, I would like to go very quickly through the history of the ship; she was launch in
1983 during the affirmation of the Colombian flag on 28 of February 1983 in the pier of
shiftships USA.
She was ready to start her first navigation, departed toward Colombia on 15 th of Mach
1983 and on 20th of March she arrived in SAI, in order to receive oil and food on board,
and continues her sailing directly toward BN1, mooring on 22 nd of march and afterward
she receive on board authorities of the government and Chief of Colombian navy admiral
Hector Calderon Salazar on the head of the President Belisario Betancourt on 24 th of
march 2023.

On 30th of june 1983 during the develop of naval operation in SAI ( logistic support to
northern, southern eastern and western Cays of SAI), the CO died in a transit accident
during the port visit in SAI, being a big impact to the crew by the time.

On 1st of September 1983 she arrived in Buenaventura for a port visit, being the first time
in the pacific ocean and received on board the senior commander German Castro
Maldonado commander of the Pacific naval force to go directly to the Gorgona island.
She continues operation in the Caribbean ocean and in 10 th of October 1985 she was
assigned permanently to compose the Pacific Naval force in accordance with the order of
the Chief of Colombian Navy.

It has been a long time but very fruitful and operative, serving in both oceans with the
impetus of their commanders and crew trough the time, it versatile and operatively
remind until our days taking in the height the name in commemoration of the senior
captain Rafael del CASTILLO Y RADA, a name that represent for the ship an hero at the
time.

This senior officer was sibling of the procerus Manuel y Jose Maria del Castillo, on 1823 he
present a project named (Proyecto de ley organica de la ARMADA) to the government
during his position as secretary of navy and war, highlighting the importance to the
country to count with a navy, given directress over aspect or organization, recruitment
and naval ordinances.

Gracias por venir aquí a hacer este acto simbólico, hoy celebramos 40 años de aniversario
del buque ha pasado mucho tiempo pero sigue operativo gracias a la tripulación, que es lo
más importante a bordo, gente que tiene ese sentido de cuidar al buque, y han apoyado la
prolongación de la vida de la Unidad.
Bueno, me gustaría hacer un repaso muy rápido por la historia del buque; fue botado en
1983 durante la afirmación de la bandera colombiana el 28 de febrero de 1983 en el
muelle de shiftships USA.
Estaba listo para iniciar su primera navegación, zarpó hacia Colombia el 15 de marzo de
1983 y el 20 de marzo arribó a SAI, con el fin de recibir petróleo y víveres a bordo, y
continúa su navegación directamente hacia BN1, atracando el 22 de marzo y
posteriormente recibe a bordo a las autoridades del gobierno y al Jefe de la Armada
Colombiana Almirante Héctor Calderón Salazar en cabeza del Presidente Belisario
Betancourt el 24 de marzo de 2023.

El 30 de junio de 1983 durante el desarrollo de la operación naval en SAI (apoyo logístico a

los cayos norte, sur oriental y occidental de SAI), el CO falleció en un accidente de tránsito
durante la visita a puerto en SAI, siendo un gran impacto para la tripulación por la época.

El 1 de septiembre de 1983 arribo a Buenaventura para una visita a puerto, siendo la

primera vez en el oceano pacifico y recibio a bordo al comandante superior German
Castro Maldonado comandante de la fuerza naval del pacifico para dirigirse directamente
a la isla Gorgona.
Continua operando en el oceano caribe y el 10 de octubre de 1985 fue asignada de
manera permanente a componer la fuerza naval del pacifico de acuerdo con la orden del
Jefe de la Armada Colombiana.

Ha sido un tiempo largo pero muy fructífero y operativo, sirviendo en ambos océanos con
el ímpetu de sus comandantes y tripulación a través del tiempo, versátil y operativamente
lo recuerdan hasta nuestros días llevando en alto el nombre en conmemoración del
capitán mayor Rafael del CASTILLO Y RADA, nombre que represento para el buque un
héroe en su momento.

Este oficial mayor era hermano de los próceres Manuel y José María del Castillo, en 1823
presentó un proyecto de ley orgánica de la ARMADA al gobierno durante su cargo como
secretario de marina y guerra, destacando la importancia para el país de contar con una
armada, dada la dirección sobre el aspecto u organización, reclutamiento y ordenanzas
navales.
