This pattern is a quick crochet project using super bulky weight yarn.

It is
crocheted in the round, in a spiral, omitting any chaining from round to round (coz
I'm a rebel like that), to avoid any seam or ladder effects. This hat will fit an
average adult head size of 20 - 23 inches, the depth can be easily manipulated to
make a longer or shorter hat. This pattern is written in American crochet terms

Materials you will need:

Yarn: 1 skein of Lion Brand Thick & Quick or 106 yards of your favorite super
bulky yarn

Crochet Hook: Sizes Q (15.75 mm), J (6 mm) and H (5 mm)

Notions: a stitch marker or large safety pin, scissors, yarn needle

dc: double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn
over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through first 2 loops on
hook, yarn over, draw yarn thru next 2 stitches on hook.

hdc: half double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch,
yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on
hook

sc: single crochet - Insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw
yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook.
dec: decrease - To single crochet 2 stitches together: draw up a loop in first stitch
and then draw up a loop in next stitch. You will now have 3 loops on hook. Yarn
over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

Begin with a magic adjustable loop. If you've never used a magic loop before,
this video may be helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHYVutk2iYY4 In
fact, youtube is great for videos about any of the stitches or techniques used in
my patterns, so if you need a refresher or want to learn something new, search
for videos on youtube.

Round 1: using your Q hook create 7 sc stitches into your magic loop

You'll be placing a stitch marker or safety pin into the first stitch, remove it when
you need to work stitches into that stitch and remember to replace it after working
that stitch, to keep your place. Remember, this is being crocheted in a spiral.

Round 2: sc 2 times in each stitch (14 stitches)

Round 3: *1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in the following stitch* - repeat (21 stitches)

Round 4: *1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the following stitch* - repeat (28

stitches)

Round 5: *1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the following stitch* - repeat (35

stitches)

Round 6: *1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the following stitch* - repeat (42

stitches)

Rounds 7 - 11: 1 sc in each stitch

It is at this point that you can add extra rows to make the hat deeper if you wish.

Rounds 12 - 13: switch to your J hook and hdc in each stitch

Round 14: 1 sc in each stitch

Now lets build the visor, you're going to switch to your H hook. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 1: Draw up a loop in the first 2 stitches, yarn over and draw thru all 3 loops
as tho you are making a decrease, single crochet in next 6 stitches, work 2 single
crochets in next stitch, single crochet in next 7 stitches, work 2 single crochets in
next stitch, single crochet in next 6 stitches, single crochet the last 2 stitches
together - as you did for the first 2 stitches - Chain 1 and turn
Row 2: work 1 single crochet in every stitch - Chain 1 and turn
Row 3: Single crochet the first 2 stitches together, single crochet in next 6
stitches, work 2 single crochets in next stitch, single crochet in next 7 stitches,
work 2 single crochets in next stitch, single crochet in next 6 stitches, single
crochet the last 2 stitches together - Chain 1 and turn
Row 4: Single crochet the first 2 stitches together, work 1 single crochet in every
stitch until the last 2 stitches, single crochet the last 2 stitches together - Chain 1
and turn
Row 5: Single crochet the first 2 stitches together, single crochet in next 5
stitches, work 2 single crochets in next stitch, single crochet in next 7 stitches,
work 2 single crochets in next stitch, single crochet in next 5 stitches, single
crochet the last 2 stitches together - Chain 1 and turn
Row 6: Single crochet the first 2 stitches together, work 1 single crochet in every
stitch until the last 2 stitches, single crochet the last 2 stitches together

Do not chain and do not turn.

Now use your J hook and sc all the way around the hat, ending where you
began. Draw your last stitch at the corner of the visor, clip your yarn and pull the
tail thru. Use your yarn needle to weave in your ends.

To add the strap detail, use your J hook and chain 24 stitches, turn and DC into
the second stitch from the hook and in every stitch across (23 stitches). Draw
your yarn thru the last stitch and clip your end, leaving a tail of a few inches. Affix
your strap above the brim of the hat evenly, using your tails on one end and a
piece of scrap yarn on the other. Add buttons ..and viola!
