BCE-201 Numerical Methods in Civil Engineering
By
Vivek Kumar Gupta

Note: Attempt all questions in the tutorial copy and submit the same by 30/09/2023. No late
submission is allowed. Those who will not submit before deadline will be given zero marks
whatsoever may be the reason.

1. The discharge Q over a notch for head 𝐻 is given by 𝑄 = 𝑘𝐻 / where 𝑘 is a given constant. If
the head is 75 cm and an error of 0.15 cm is possible in its measurement, estimate the
percentage error in computing the discharge.
2. If 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾 are the roots of equation 𝑥 + 3𝑥 + 4 = 0, then find an equation whose roots are
𝛼 + 𝛽, 𝛽 + 𝛾, 𝛾 + 𝛼.
3. Solve the following system of linear simultaneous equations by Gauss-elimination method:

2𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 𝑥 = 3;
3𝑥 + 2𝑥 − 2𝑥 = −2;
𝑥 − 𝑥 + 𝑥 = 6.
4. Find a real root of the equation 𝑥 = 𝑒 using Newton-Raphson method.
5. Find cube root of 29 correct to 3 decimal places using Horner’s method.
6. Find all roots of the equation 𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 5𝑥 − 2 = 0 𝑏𝑦 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑒 𝑠 𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑.
7. Discuss the Geometrical interpretation of Newton Raphson method. Derive Newton’s iterative
formula to find the reciprocal of a given number 𝑁 and hence find the value of 1/19 correct to 5
decimal places.
8. According to Archimedes principle, the buoyancy force is equal to the weight of fluid displaced
by the submerged portion of an object. For a sphere of radius 𝑟 = 1 meter and density
200𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚 partially submerged in water whose density is 1000 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚 , determine the height, ℎ
of the portion of sphere that is above the water surface. Use Bisection method. Take the volume
of the portion of the sphere above water surface as 𝑉 = (3𝑟 − ℎ).
9. A sphere of pine wood, 2 meters in diameter, floating in water sinks to the depth of ℎ meter,
given by ℎ − 3ℎ + 2.5 = 0. Find the value of ℎ correct to 3 decimal places
by Horner’s method.
10. Solve the following system of linear simultaneous equations by Crout’s method:

2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 𝑥 = −1;
2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 𝑥 = 1;
𝑥 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 = −1;
𝑥 + 𝑥 + 2𝑥 = 3.
11. Solve the following system of linear simultaneous equations by Gauss-Seidal method:

10𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 𝑥 − 𝑥 = 3;
−2𝑥 + 10𝑥 − 𝑥 − 𝑥 = 15;
−𝑥 − 𝑥 + 10𝑥 − 2𝑥 = 27;
−𝑥 − 𝑥 − 2𝑥 + 10𝑥 = −9.
