BUILDING THE ELITE FOOTBALLER
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
OUR HISTORY, OUR CULTURE

Singapore as a country, has shown in the past that we can rise

against the odds and achieve international success.

Our feats in football to date are reflected below however in recent years
Singapore has fallen behind neighboring countries and steps need to
be taken to address this decline.

4 AFF 1 AFC Asian Cup

Championship Group Stage Appearance
Champions 1984
1998 | 2004/5 | 2007 | 2012

At youth level Singapore needs a playing philosophy that is adopted

throughout the country, one that promotes and facilitates the
development of players. The reality of the game at Senior National
Team level is that coaches understandably focus on short term results
and adopt whatever strategies that they feel are appropriate to
achieve these results. If Singapore as a country is to improve its
footballing status, it follows that results will need to be achieved
against higher ranked teams and against countries with larger talent
pools. As a country we need to produce players who have the ability
and confidence to play in different positions in various systems of play
and who can raise the level of our senior teams.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
WHY THIS PHILOSOPHY

To improve our standing on the international stage we must implement a

style of play which is both attractive and effective. If this goal is to be
achieved Singapore needs to develop players capable of playing a
possession-based game with the emphasis on being effective in possession.

Coaches working with young players need to

ensure that the focus is on ball mastery,
creativity and problem solving in a football
context.

The implementation of such a playing style requires players to be technically

proficient, good decision makers both with and without the ball, physically
well conditioned and mentally strong. Coaches working with young players
need to ensure that the focus is on ball mastery, creativity and problem
solving in a football context. When players begin representing Singapore at
AFF/AFC tournaments they need to be aware of what effective possession
involves and how to try and achieve this.

If Singapore is to successfully implement this playing philosophy, it will

require coaches and players to have an appropriate mindset and to focus on
performance as opposed to results at a young age.
FUDBALSKA FILOZOFIJA

Our football philosophy revolves around being effective in possession with

a high tempo style of play.
It is important that possession is not seen as an end in itself, we need to be
effective in possession by playing forwards whenever possible and
bypassing opponents in a controlled manner. We need to create and take
goalscoring opportunities by moving the ball quickly, creating space
individually and collectively and by being effective in 1 v 1 situations. Players
must have the confidence and belief to be creative and inventive.
Out of possession, we should seek to maintain a positive mindset and
attempt to win the ball back as close to the opposition goal as possible.
There will undoubtedly be occasions however when this is not possible and
our teams will need to defend in a disciplined and compact manner.

Effective possession means that simply

keeping the ball is not the main objective. The
aim is to try and play forwards whenever
possible and get our players and the ball into
goalscoring positions in a controlled manner.

BEHIND THE
FOUR MAIN MOMENTS
FUDBALSKA FILOZOFIJA
MOMENTI (TRENUCI) IGRE – U posedu

Uopšteno govoreći, izuzimajući kompletnu igru, postoje četiri (4) glavna momenta igre kojim treba da se pozabave. Ova 4 momenta čine ključne
komponente meča gde se stil i filozofija implementiraju i usavršavaju.

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
MOMENTS OF PLAY – Out of Possession
An effective defensive organisation requires players to quickly get into a defensive structure and collectively look to win the ball back as soon as
possible. Once organised, we look to press the opposition in a methodical way, with all units of the team playing a role in remaining compact
and functioning as one.

OUT OF POSSESSION
FUDBALSKA FILOZOFIJA TAKTIČKE SMERNICE

To bring this style of play to life, we need a clear model to follow, one that can be incorporated throughout the developing years of our young
footballers and have it sub-consciously imbedded into them by the time they reach the performance phase. To facilitate this we introduce players
to tactical guidelines both with and without the ball.

LEARNING FORMATION
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
FORMATION FOR LEARNING

The Big Game 1–4–3–3

FAS advocates using the 4–3–3 system, as this formation complements
our playing philosophy. The most important factor however is the
playing style adopted within the formation! The formation provides a
framework from which players can operate and should not be a
constraint that restricts interchange of players/positions and forward
running to disrupt the opposition defensive structure.
We will use this formation and integrate it into our Coach Education
System and use it as a basis for learning for all our youth National
teams until we reach the Performance Phase.

The 4 – 3 – 3 system facilitates:

Effective positional play

Combination play / short passing game / forward passing
Creative and varied attacking play using the full width of the field
Early disruption and pressuring when possession is lost

As part of the development process however, players as they reach

the Performance Phase need to be exposed to different formations
and tactics, but the principles and style of play should remain constant.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STYLE OF PLAY

IN POSSESSION
Our footballing philosophy revolves around being effective in
possession. The 4-3-3 formation provides the platform for players to
interchange positions provide the player on the ball with forward
passing options and to create overloads in key areas of the pitch.

Quick and precise ball movement

Quick player movement to create space and/or goalscoring
opportunities
Smart and quick decision-making, identifying when and how to
penetrate opposition’s defensive structure during both the build-
up and ball retention phases

“Singapore will try to play a possession

based game however with the emphasis on
being effective in possession ”

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STYLE OF PLAY

OUT OF POSSESSION

Out of possession, we need to be able to press high with the purpose of

winning the ball back as soon as we can and as close as possible to the
opposition goal or if this is not possible we aim to delay and make play
predictable so as to create the next opportunity to win the ball back.

The 4-3-3 formation facilitates pressing in different ways with players

able to change roles and responsibilities depending on how the
opposition try to build up play and also taking into consideration the
context of the game.

“We need to have the ability to press high and

try to win the ball back quickly but also know
how to defend from deeper depending on the
context of the game”

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
FORMATION FOR LEARNING

Small Sided Games 5v5

Throughout their development it is preferable for young players

to learn through a progressive series of SSG formats fixed by
age and phase of development, gradually building up to the 11 v
11 format. Playing small sided games enables players to have
more touches on the ball and experience more frequently,
realistic game like situations that will facilitate their development.
SSG’s give players more opportunities to encounter for
example, 1 v 1 situations, 2 v 1 situations and so on.
Consequently, not only will this benefit technical development
but it will also enhance basic tactical understanding both with
and without the ball.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
FORMATION FOR LEARNING

Medium Games 7v7

From 5 v 5 the logical step is for players to progress to 7 v 7, 9

v 9 and eventually 11 v 11.

There are several possible ways in which teams can set up.
The most important factor however is that teams try to
implement a possession-based approach, therefore by starting
with 3 players at the back it should enable teams to play out.
By adhering to the basic principles of play when in possession
in relation to width, mobility and penetration young players can
experience more touches on the ball, more realistic game
situations and also enhance their basic tactical understanding.

Young players do not need to learn positional requirements at

an early age and it will be beneficial for their development to
experience playing in different positions.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
FORMATION FOR LEARNING

Big Games 9v9

The progression to 9 v 9 is the final step before players enter

the realm of 11 v 11.

The starting shape of the team should facilitate the players

being able to try and build up play from the back. As with the 7
v 7 format regardless of the set up the most important factor is
the way teams try to play.

Playing 9 v 9 facilitates more connections, interactions and

introduces the players to the concept of having different units
within the team.

Players should be encouraged to interchange positions during

the game and also experience playing in different positions to
further their development.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
FORMATS OF PLAY

The formation used in our development model will be the 1–4–3–3 system, in alignment with our footballing philosophy. We will use this formation
and integrate it into our Coach Education System and as a basis for learning for all our youth National teams until we reach the Performance
Phase.

In Singapore, we need to grow our pool of players and that is critical in the Discovery Phase. The Discovery Phase is all about having fun,
enjoying the environment with their friends and letting each child fall in love with the game in their own way.

The methods used by coaches in this phase are:

✓ Small sided games with lots of touches of the ball

✓ Lots of encouragement for the player
✓ No/little coaching, but letting them Play for Fun

The Foundation Phase relates to children from 9 – 12 years old. This is considered the “Golden age of learning,” a phase in which we have not
focused enough in the past and has been reflected in the development of our players. With our model so heavily dependent on a competent
technical footballer, we place a huge emphasis on our coaching process of the Core Skills, which will form the foundation of our technical
base.

Each core skill has different aspects that can be covered throughout this stage. By creating an environment that requires these core skills to be
repeatedly practised incorporating Perception/Decision Making/Execution we will enhance the development of our technically gifted footballer and allow
him/her to successfully execute our playing philosophy. Putting young players into an environment whereby they have to regularly make decisions is
vitally important.
During this stage, players will be exposed to the basic principles of the game which will facilitate tactical development so that they Play To Learn.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

The Youth Development phase is a continued process of progression for our players. From the Foundation phase where we focused on the
development of the 4 Core Skills, we now look at perfecting those skills and facilitating players to utilize these skills within the main moments
of the game, underpinned by better decision making. The need to use both feet should be emphasized and players should be encouraged to
connect and combine and look for creative solutions to maintain possession especially in tight areas while also seeking opportunities to
penetrate.

Players need to develop their positional understanding and also their tactical understanding in relation to the different units of the team. Physical
development should be addressed ideally on an individualized basis to ensure optimum development in this area.

Coaches also need to facilitate physical development by ensuring training and matches are conducted with an appropriate intensity.

Youth Development
Phase U/13 – U/16

▪ Connect and combine
▪ Positional understanding

Our coaching in this stage is designed to deal with:

✓ The role of units within the team
✓ Incorporating superior decision-making in game situations
✓ Gradually increasing physical/mental capabilities
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

In the previous stages of a player’s development, the player was taught in a competitive, challenging structure while developing the tools needed
to implement our playing style. In that same environment, the footballer learnt to be very competitive due to the challenge presented by his

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
CORE SKILLS OVERVIEW

To implement the style of play which revolves around effective ball possession, playing with a pro-active mindset, and controlling the tempo of
the game, it is underpinned by our playing principles which transcend all playing forms, 11 v 11, 9 v 9, 7 v 7, 5 v 5 etc. These principles are
therefore not only a crucial guide for teams in the performance phase, but also those in the Youth development phase. There is a clear
connection.

For our teams to implement our playing style, it will require players to successfully perform the individual player actions outlined below.

Running With Striking

The Ball 1v1 1st Touch

• With Pace • Passing • Attacking • Out of Feet

• Change of Direction • Shooting • Defending • Away from Opponent
• Through Congestion • Heading • Turning • Weight of Touch
• When in space • Crossing • Front/Side on/Back to Opponent
• Aerial control

Without players who are capable of making good decisions and executing elements of the core skills, our style of play cannot be implemented
effectively. These core skills are the basic constituents of our style and should be prioritised during the Foundation Phase.

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
Running With
RUNNING WITH THE BALL
The Ball

Purpose:
One of the principles of attacking play is penetration. When we have the
ball, we need to infiltrate and/or disrupt the opponents structure to try and
score goals. Running with the ball occurs when there is space available
and by doing so, we carry the ball forwards in order to initiate or progress
attacks. When space is limited, dribbling comes into play.

Specific Aspect:
• Running with the ball when clear of the defence
• Identify and attack space (cut defender’s recovery run)
• Running with the ball when there is space in front and try to commit
a defender
• Running with the ball when in space and playing out from the back
• 2 v1 Creating or taking advantage of overloads

▪ Decision: run with the ball or pass
▪ Touch out of feet
▪ Travel quickly into space
▪ Contact with laces of the front foot
▪ Head up after every touch to see if picture has changed
▪ Outcome at the end, Pass, Combination, Cross, Shot, Turn or Dribble
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STRIKING THE BALL

Purpose:
Striking the ball consists of many skills. Passing, shooting, crossing and
heading are all important elements of striking the ball to ensure ball
retention and/or goal creation. Different parts of the feet should be utilised
to strike the ball depending on the intention of the player with the ball and
players must use both feet

Specific Aspect:
▪ First time passing
▪ Heading
▪ Switching play
▪ Killer pass (penetrate opponents)
▪ Finishing
▪ Disguised passes
▪ Crossing (from different areas of the pitch)
Striking the Ball
▪ Wall pass and third man run (combination play)

Coaching Points:
▪ Observe, assess the GK's position
▪ Decide on type of finish
▪ Contact on the ball
▪ Position of head and body
▪ Head steady, looking at ball
▪ Body position depends on type of shot
▪ Follow through in direction of target
▪ Secondary chances (e.g. Rebound attempts)
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STRIKING THE BALL - HEADING
Heading

Purpose:
The purpose of heading in an attacking sense, is much like passing in
that we need to achieve an outcome whether its an element used in
build up or link play or a finishing component to score.

Coaching Points:

Attacking Headers

▪ Assess the flight of the ball

▪ Movement to get into line
▪ Watch the ball
▪ Attack the ball
▪ Contact on the ball to head downwards (top half of the ball)
▪ Contact ideally on the forehead
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
STRIKING THE BALL - HEADING

Purpose:
The purpose of heading in a defensive sense is to eliminate
dangerous situations when the ball is in the air. Players should look to
get distance and height with defensive headers.

1st Touch

Purpose:
First touch is the player’s first impact with the ball. First touch is one of
the most important elements in playing football. A good first touch sets
a player up to implement their next action which could be a pass, a
shot, a cross, running with the ball and so on. In addition, the 1st touch

can also be a pass or a shot etc.

Specific Aspect:
▪ Weight and direction of touch (away from opponent)
▪ Receive on back foot if in space
• 1st touch to initiate next action eg a shot
• 1st touch away from defenders
• 1st touch to go forward
• 1st touch with various parts of the body

4 ▪ Dictate (make play predictable/Prevent forward passes)

The following player attributes are a guideline in terms of the qualities Singapore would like
players in different positions to possess.

Players will be stronger in some areas than others and being able to find the complete player is
unrealistic. Singapore does not have the luxury of having a large playing pool.

COACH EDUCATION &
TALENT
IDENTIFICATION
BUILDING A NATIONAL SCOUTING SYSTEM
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
TALENT IDENTIFICATION

Talent Identification is one of the most important components of a

successful football model, especially in the context of Singapore..With a
comparatively small population it is vital to maximise our talent pool.

“It is imperative not to confuse Talent with

Physical maturity.”

Our Talent Identification process is based on identifying promising young

players with appropriate technical, tactical, physical and mental attributes
that will enable us to ensure that they are placed in a suitable
development environment

To identify potentially elite players we must look beyond present

performance and also focus on future potential taking into consideration
how a player can develop in an elite environment.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
TALENT IDENTIFICATION

In Singapore, the scouting network is led by Football Association of

Singapore. The basis of the talent identification process will be focused on
specific attributes that are important to the playing style.

The FAS Head of Talent Identification will work with National team
coaches to form an effective scouting team. They will be supported by our
partners in the Grassroots programs such as SFA/ActiveSG coaches,
Centre of Excellence coaches and School coaches.

“Late developers who might not be selected for

National Youth Teams must be identified and
receive adequate provision”

Under our National project “Unleash the Roar”, we will have a much more
effective and structured identification system that can identify players
through the various pathways within our project pillars.
As the players develop through the various stages of their football
journey, the identification of the player will become more position specific
and specialised to meet the demands of our playing style.
COACH EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT

COACH EDUCATION
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACH EDUCATION

Our footballing philosophy has to be reflected throughout the whole

pathway of our Coach Education system.

“Coach Education will play a vital role in fulfilling our

vision. It has the highest potential to ‘influence’ and
the highest ability to ‘change and challenge’ our
current style.”
Therefore, it is essential to infuse our Singapore footballing philosophy
within our Coach Education system. A successful coaching system will
produce a new wave of high quality coaches who will be better
prepared and understand the style of play and implement appropriate
coaching methods to help players realise their full potential during
different stages of development.

The Coach Education system will also be able to refresh the methods of
our current coaches and to align them to the necessary methodology in
reaching our objectives.

A great measure of success of Singapore’s Coach Education process,

would also see the progression of our Singapore coaches perform their
craft in overseas competitions.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACH EDUCATION
All our courses are currently being reviewed and updated to
accommodate the key areas identified to improve the coaches
capabilities in catering to the needs of our footballers at every stage of
their development.

“Our current style must be challenged, changed and

developed in order for our teams to reach their
highest potential. This can only be achieved through
the systematic development of our Coach Education
system in creating a better coach.

The main areas to be addressed in our Coach Education system:

• Infusion of the National Playing & Coaching Philosophy

• Incorporation of the sports science and physical component in
the stages of development
• SG-Coach Level 1 Fully Integrated FAS/AFC “C” Coaching Course
• Mentoring and support to the coaches
(With senior coaches in SFAs & DCs)
• Introduction of the Coaching Licence system

NATIONAL COACHING
PHILOSOPHY
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Having established the national football playing philosophy “A pro-active,

possession based, high tempo style of play”. Singapore now needs a
National Coaching Philosophy to guide and align our coaches towards a
methodology that is best for youth development in Singapore football.

‘Better Coaches  Better Players’

There is a process to gaining a winning mentality, and most of it is instilled

throughout their footballing journey.

“Winning can never be prioritised over

development during these formative years.”
There is a clear difference between, trying to win every game and
winning at all costs. We need to create a positive learning environment as
the player develops through the pathway in becoming a brave elite
footballer. If mistakes aren’t made, there will be no learning.

Clubs, schools and parents must recognise that the value of a good
coach at youth level is not solely about winning, but building an
enjoyment of the game and developing players through the pathway
created.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

The first thing we have to do is to adopt the ‘Learning over Winning’

mindset in our grassroots and youth football. It is of great importance that
players get more touches of the ball during the golden phase of learning.

However, too often in school football, coaches employ tactics aimed

solely at achieving positive results and ignore player development. There
is nothing wrong with trying to win matches however the way in which
teams try to win is just as important.

Coaches must adopt a mindset of learning over winning. With individual

development the main priority, coaches should always set upon teaching
the players and providing them a training and playing environment that
facilitates learning.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

In the past, it was common sight to have many of our footballers in

Singapore grow up playing football in the streets, void-decks of housing
estates or even basketball courts. Children just played instinctively.
Dribbled, flicked, toe poked the ball into goal and imitating many other
tricks they saw their football heroes perform on TV.

“There was a freedom of trying out things without

the fear of making mistakes. Creativity was allowed
to blossom, and players developed through their
own learnings”

With academics being heavily emphasised in Singapore, children have

less time to play football. Therefore, players that attend grassroots and
youth football must have an environment where they are able to try things
without fear of making mistakes. Coaches should allow freedom for
creativity to thrive!

Let the young ones enjoy the game!

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Football is dynamic and complex game, consisting of many situations that

requires decision making. Young players must have an environment of
making decisions by themselves. Once the game starts, they play the
game, not the coaches!

“… Simulate real game situations where the

players make decisions in accordance to
the game”

In training, coaches have to simulate real game situations where the

players can make decisions, read the game and learn from it.
This non-linear aspect is of great importance!

Players must be able to perceive, decide and execute the correct decision
in different situations. The more real game situations they go through in
trainings, the easier it becomes in matches.

The linear aspect of technique training also has its role. Repetition allows
the player to gain familiarity and build habitual patterns. This should be
done from a very early stage of their development
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Football, being the most popular sport in Singapore, can play a big role in
developing characteristics needed to handle the complex challenges of
our fast-changing world.
Photo here should be:
“Sports builds character and leadership, but this
does not happen by chance. We need to be
intentional about character and leadership
A coach with young players development – Davdison, 2004”

Coaches are the single most important influence on how players develop

Perhaps a girls coach will be good their character! Coaches must understand that all boys/girls will
eventually grow up and contribute to society, and they are able to help
them become a good citizen of Singapore!

Coaches need to continuously emphasise values as much as sport skills,

so that players understand the importance of Sportsmanship.
All coaches must be a role model in what they say and do.
They uphold and share positive values with the players such as
respecting the decisions of officials and influence the players to do the
same.

The development of the person is as important as the development of the

footballer !
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
GAME FOR LIFE FRAMEWORK

Moving forward, Sport Singapore’s Game For Life Framework will be used extensively by the FAS Coach Education Department. Coaching
courses will now incorporate this framework. Thus, all graduating coaches will use it to develop the players both in character and skills. Refresher
courses will be conducted to aid current coaches learn, understand and apply this new methods introduced.

FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING PHILOSOPHY

There is a range of coaching methods that a coach can adopt in his

coaching. The “command” method is one that many coaches will be
accustomed to, but in recent times, this method has taken a back seat.

“The game is played by players and it’s essential

to have players who understand and can think
for themselves during the game.”

Coaches may have good knowledge of football but must also understand
that their young players may not. It is important that players attain such
knowledge through our sessions.

‘Question and Answer’ is a good method to get players thinking for

themselves. The game is played by players and it’s essential to have
players who understand and can think for themselves during the game.

Constant observation and feedback is crucial for the development of the

players. Therefore, our coaches will need to be a good analyst of their
players performance.
The interaction of the players in their own development, is essential to
creating a better player.
FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
COACHING STYLES

A Coach needs to be able to use the various methods at the appropriate time to coach the young players……..
