HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

EXPECTATIONS
This lesson will help you identify the meaning and proper use of the parts of speech
namely: modal verbs, nouns, and adverbs. At the end of this module you should be able to:

 recall concepts on modal verbs, nouns, and adverbs;


 select appropriate modal verbs, nouns, and adverbs in completing sentences; and
 compose sentences observing rules in using modal verbs, nouns, and adverb.

permission, obligation, or ability.

Dogs and Depression

Could your dog be depressed? Do dogs even get depressed? Like humans, some dogs
can occasionally suffer from bouts of depression. Although dogs do not have the same capacity
for reasoning as we humans, it does not mean they cannot experience depression. In dogs,
depression is not the same complex clinical disorder that it is in people. However, dogs can
certainly experience depression.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION:

Adverbs qualify or modify an adjective, verb, or another adverb. These give descriptions
of how, where, in what manner, when, or to what extent an action is performed.

Types of Adverb

 Adverb of Manner

o This explains how an action happens. Commonly, it is placed after the main verb
or after the object.
 Danny carefully handed the medicine to his grandparents.
 The doctor speaks softly and respectfully to his patients.

 Adverb of Place

o This tells where an action took place. Adverbs of place modifies the main verb.
 Sheena needs to put the clean-up drive campaign outside.
 Here, students with special capabilities are given equal chance to learn.

Note: Adverbs of place functions as a preposition when it is followed by a noun.

 Adverb of Frequency

o It describes how often or how frequent something happens.


 We participate in cultural fest annually.
 Our family goes to church every Sunday.

 Adverb of Time

o It tells about the time something occurs.


 Yesterday, John cleaned the house.
 Next month, we will join the immersion in a remote area.

 Adverb of Degree

o It determines the degree or intensity of an action.


 She almost missed meeting the religious group.
 Dra. Jewel is very proud to be part of an ethnic group.
