Project Arctic
In Project Arctic I crochet different animals that live on or around the poles. They may live on
the ice, in the air or in the water. What makes those animals special, is that many of them have
a very different appearance when they're young compared to when they are grown up. And
that is very nice to crochet!

Materials
• 1 ball Phildar douce ecru 0032
• 2 safety eyes 9 mm black
• 1 safety nose: 12 mm triangle black
• Stuffing
• 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6)
• Yarn needle

Size
The seal will be about 20 cm long and 10 cm wide.

Abbreviations
The pattern is written in US terms.

sc: single crochet

sc inc: 2 single crochet in same stitch
*: Repeat instructions between asterisks the number of times specified. (e.g. *3: repeat 3x)
mr: magic ring
sc2tog: single crochet two together

At the end of a round, the total number of stitches for that round is shown between brackets.

Instructions
The entire seal is made with Phildar douce ecru with a 4mm crochet hook (US G/6).

Head and body

The head and body are worked in 1 piece. You start with the nose.

While working Round 10, place a stitch marker in the 7th stitch. This will be the top of the head and will help
position the eyes and nose after R10.

R10: 12sc, (3sc, sc inc, 2sc)*3 (33)

Now place the nose in the center of the magic ring. Next, place the eyes to the left and right of the nose. Because
we crochet the seal with fluffy yarn, you will not see the individual stitches and rows. You therefore have to
position the eyes with the help of the photos below. The stitch marker you placed during R10 also helps with this:
it is on the top of the head.

After placing the eyes you can remove the stitch marker.

Put some stuffing in the head of seal.

R15 - R20: 24sc (24)

R21: sc2tog, 5sc, sc2tog, 15sc (22)

R23: sc2tog, 3sc, sc2tog, 13sc (18)

Put more stuffing in the seal. You will fill the seal completely after R27, but now it's still easy to get the stuffing in.

Fill the seal completely with stuffing. Press top and bottom of the body flat together and work both sides
together with 4sc. Then tie off.

Front fins (2 pieces)

T1: 4sc in mr (4)
T2: (sc inc, 1sc)*2 (6)
T3: (sc inc, 2sc)*2 (8)
T4: sc inc, 7sc (9)
T5: sc inc, 8sc (10)
T6: sc inc, 3sc, sc2tog, 4sc (10)

Fasten off and leave a good length of thread. Fill the fin lightly. With the piece of wire that is still attached to the
fin, you attach the fin to the body of the seal. Now make the other fin.

Tail fins (2 pieces)

Make both tail fins first before you attach them.

T1: 4sc in mr (4)

T2: (sc inc)*4 (8)
T3: (sc inc, 3sc)*2 (10)
T4-5: 10sc (10)
T6: (2sc, sc2tog, 1sc)*2 (8)
T7: (1sc, sc2tog, 1sc)*2 (6)

Fasten off and leave a good length of thread. The tail fins are not filled, but flattened.
The seal's body still has two pointy egdes at the position where the tail fins should be placed. Slide the tail fins
slightly over these points and sew them on.
