SE-BEB-03AC-MST-0051-Rev4 MS For Remedial Works To Waterstop Detail Defects
1.0 SCOPE
The scope of this method statement is to describe how to repair external water stop
defects where the waterstop has air voids under the surface, delaminations, or is not
aligned with the surface profile of the exterior concrete wall. It does not address any
instances of waterstop misalignment with regard to the joint. Such cases will have
specific repair requirements and would be the subject of a location and condition specific
MS. All work will be carried out in a manner that conforms to the specified requirements
of the contract documents. This MS is applicable for the repair of the described external
water stop defects on all concrete structures in the MC3 scope of work. This method
statement will describe the method of work for external water stop repairs with reference
to the manufacturer’s technical data sheets, MSDS’s, and other approved method
statements for the details relating to mixing, application, curing, storage, and safety
precautions of the products
All works will be carried out by BEB Construction Team in accordance with site safety
rules and regulations.
3.0 PROGRAMME/SCHEDULE
Work schedule will be provided and attached with permits and STARRT Cards for each
area/activity.

Remedial Work to Waterstop Detail Defects Page 3 of 17
Prior to commencement of work, a general site access permit will be obtained from HSE
and all site personnel involved in this work will attend training sessions related with their
working area.
Work will be completed in the following sequence for external water stop repair on the
concrete joints:
After stripping the formworks, external water stop will be visually inspected for the
alignment
When conducting a visual inspection of the external water stop the following
information will be recorded:
- Alignment of the water stop
- Depth of the water stop from the surface
The full width of waterstop will be exposed and all the loose cement grout removed
from the surface by chipping. Broken edges of the concrete between 5 mm to 30 mm
will be restored using Sika Monotop 612 (SE-BEB-03AC-MST-00048). Curing of the
repair surface will be done as per the method statement SE-BEB-03AC-MST-00021.
The exposed surface will be cleaned with pressurized air at the end
As per the statement of vendor’s technical services (Refer to Attachment D), if the
waterstop bar is in alignment with the joint, then the structure is water tight
In case of vertical misalignment, whereby difference in levels is noticed at
construction joints, a thick waterproofing layer will be applied. To ensure proper
waterproofing application on the structure, re-profiling of the recessed surface will be
done by using Type 1 (Bitustick 1000) waterproofing membrane, which is to be
tailored in order to fill the gaps
Voids between the concrete and water stop will be filled by injecting Sika Injection-
306 (SE-BEB-03ST-MTL-00058) starting from bottom to the top. Sika Injection-306 is
an elastic polyacrylic injection resin used for permanent watertight sealing (Refer to
Sika Injection-306 Product Description in Attachment B)
4.2 Repair of swelling defects and water stooper being embedded inside concrete
Defects of waterstop, will be repaired according to the drawing in Attachment E.
Concrete surface under the defected part of waterstop will be chipped up to the rebar.
Waterstop will then be tied to rebar with a tie-wire.
Chipping will be performed for the full width of the water stop even if a portion of the
water stop has not delaminated. The chipping will be performed as shown in the
drawing in Attachment E.
If the water stop is damaged during the chipping operations the damaged section of
water bar will be removed and a new section will be placed and will be welded using
welding blade.
Water stop will be cut at the bend before applying repair material (Renderoc LAXtra)
to the chipped area under defected part. Waterstop will be welded using welding
blade. Alternatively, no cutting process will be done and chipped area under the
defected part will be filled with repair material (Renderoc LAXtra) directly.
Before applying repair material, a formwork will be fixed to the chipped area under the
water stopper. Concrete will be wet with water jet two hours prior to application of
repair material., The concrete surface shall be dry while applying the repair material,
to prevent impact on water ratio in repair material. Any defects vertically longer than
one meter will be repaired partially by setting formwork for each one meter separately
in order to make sure repair material will fill the defected area properly.
During the application of repair material, it will be ensured that chipped area will be
fully filled with repair material and the grip and contact with water stopper with
concrete or grout is fully achieved.
Any repaired area will be fixed with Type-1 Membrane to ensure water resistance in
the water stop area.
Curing and application of repair materials will be in accordance with SE-BEB-03AC-
MST-00048 Repair of Concrete Defects and SE-BEB-03AC-MST-00021 Concrete

! " Improved heat resistance.
! " Excellent resistance to chlorides, sulphates, alkalis and acids.
! " Good tear and puncture resistance.
! " Water and vapour proof.
! APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Surface preparation
A smooth, regular and dry surface is always a must for good application. The substrate should be
completely free of any protrusions or cavities. The presence of oily substances, frost or other moisture
should be completely avoided. Apply Polyprime SB at a rate of 4 # 6 sq.m. per litre as a primer coat.
The primer coat should be touch dry before the application of the membrane.
Application
The application temperature should be between 40C to 450C. The installation procedures are to be as
follows :
1. Unroll only the required length, and cut the piece to the desired shape and size.
2. Place the pieces of membrane on the area to be covered, and check whether they match with the
profile of the marked substrate.
3. Peel off the release film and carefully place the membrane so as to ensure a minimum of 75mm
overlap and then smooth the membrane from the center to the edges in order to drive out entrapped
air.
4. Place a Bituboard on top of the membrane soon after the application in order to prevent any
damage from exposure to sunlight, backfilling.
! HANDLING
Bitustick membranes are packed in loose corrugated boxes to avoid any damage during transit or on
site. The membranes can be unloaded by hand or any other convenient means, but ensure the absence
of any sharp or protruding edges within close proximity to avoid puncturing the membrane.

Attachment D – Sika Technical Services Statement about the Water Stop Defects at
site
Dear Baris
Thank you for your e mail and the attached pictures concerning the above and we respond as
follows:-
The pictures are similar to the mock up I saw when I recently visited the site. The edges of
the waterbar have been dislodged during concrete placement and compaction. As explained
on site this can be prevented by light nailing through the nailing flange at the edge of the
waterbar to the formwork. Stepped nails are ideal for this.
The joint will still be protected provided the waterbar is still in alignment with the joint. Your
pictures and from what I saw on site show that the alignment is OK so the joint will be
watertight.
We trust that the above meets with your approval, but should you require further assistance
please do not hesitate in contacting us.
Kind regards
Sika Oman
