The number pairs in the above sets have
been written top to bottom rather than side by
side, as Agrippa has written the corresponding
letters, to reflect the folding of the Hebrew
alphabet back on itself. Letters that have been
transposed out of their normal position are rep-
resented by numbers in bold type. The name of
each set is given in English to the right.
Appended to Ziruph are two sets mentioned by
Ginsburg in his treatment of this subject ([1863]
766 / THE THREE BOOKS OF OCCULT PHILOSOPHY

1970, 137). The first of these appended sets is
found at the end of the Rational Table of Ziruph
given by Agrippa.
Notice that some of the pairs are necessar-
ily repeated. For example in the Table of Ziruph
the pair AL, '?~, which occurs in the first place
of the first set, called Albath, also occurs in the
first place in the 12th set, Albach. Notice also
that the first (Abgath) and 21st (Athbash) sets in
the Rational Table occur in the regular Table of
Ziruph, forming respectively the second and
22nd sets.
The use of the combinations of Ziruph is
straightforward. In each particular set paired let-
ters are considered to be Kabbalistically related
and interchangeable. By substituting letters for
their pairs, new words can be created that are
occultly linked to the words that give them rise;
also the numerical sums of words can be manip-
ulated. This is done to yield insights into diffi-
cult speculations, or more commonly to furnish
proofs for convictions previously arrived at by
other means.
Also into the category of temurah fall the
three Tables of Commutations called the Right,
the Averse, and the Irregular. The Right Table
takes its name from the upper row of letters,
which is written in the normal Hebrew way,
right to left. Its structure is so simple as to
barely require comment. In the second row the
aleph, ~, is moved from its place to the end of
the alphabet; in the third row the aleph, ~, and
beth, :::J, are moved to the end; and so on down
the table until in the bottom row the alphabet is
completely transposed except for the letter tau,
n. Similarly, in the Averse Table, so-called
because the upper row is written in reverse
order, from left to right, letters are successively
moved from the end of the alphabet to the
beginning until the alphabet is completely trans-

the structure of the table is examined it will be
seen that these are the letters which it was neces-
sary to shift at variance with the overall pattern
in order to preserve the complete alphabet in
both rows and columns. They represent breaks
in the system. This is clearly shown when the
pairs in boldface type in each row are inverted.
Why the Irregular table is also · called
Averse is not apparent to me, since the alphabet
is written in its correct sequence on all four
sides of the square in four different directions,
the upper row being from right to left-but per-
haps I have not correctly understood the use of
this term in the previous table.
The method of using the tables of commu-
tations must be conjectured-since I have not
found it anywhere described-from their
requirement to substitute one letter for another.
The right outer column that has the alphabet in
its normal sequence could be used as a key
through which might be inserted the letters of a
word or sentence desired to be transmuted.
There would thus be 21 possible variations. I
stress that this is only conjecture on my part.
Falling under the heading temurah, but
important enough to be considered on its own, is
the Kabbalah of Nine Chambers, or Aiq Beker,
i:>:::J p~, so-called from the first six letters that
constitute it. The Hebrew alphabet is written into
the nine cells of a grid formed by two pairs of
parallel lines that intersect at right angles, result-
ing in three letters in each cell (22 letters plus 5
final forms equal 27 letters). The way of entering
the letters is most easily shown by a diagram:

Any letter is occultly linked, and thus may
be exchanged , with the other letters in its cell
on the grid. For example, the letter he, i1, may
be substituted for with either the letters nun, J,
or the fi nal form of kaph, l. Similarly their val-
ues may be interchanged in occult computa-
tions. Agrippa uses the Aiq Beker extensively in
extracting his sigils for the spirits and intelli-
gences of the planets from the magic squares in
ch. XXII , bk. II. The Aiq Beker, and the system
of secret writing that is based upon it, are
described by Agrippa in ch. XXX, bk. III.
Another Kabbalistic technique for form-
ing words with magical significance is that of
writing verses from the Torah one over the
other, and then extracting words from the ver-
tical columns of letters. The most important
use of this device involves Exodus 14: 19-21,
each verse of which contains 72 letters (see
page 769).

of placing the names one after the other in order
around the heavens without regard to their ele-
mental associations.
