This descriptive-correlational study aimed to determine the listening ability and

academic performance of Grade 10 students of Laua-an National High School for the

school year 2018 – 2019. Specifically, it sought to determine the level of listening

ability and academic performance when they were taken as an entire group and

classified according to sex, parents’ annual income and parents’ educational

attainment and whether there are significant differences. This study also sought to

determine whether there is a significant relationship between listening ability and

academic performance of students.

This study involved fifty (50) students of whom eighteen (18) were males and

thirty - two (32) were females. Data on students’ listening ability were gathered using

test questionnaires validated and contextualized by jury members. On the other

hand, to determine the academic performance of the respondents, their general

Weighted Average during the first grading period of the school year 2018-2019 was

used.

Statistical tools employed in this study were frequency, percentage, mean as

descriptive statistics, t-test for independent samples, One-way ANOVA and Pearson’s

r set at .05 alpha level were the inferential statistics employed. All statistical
computations were processed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)

software, version 20.0.

The study revealed that the students have a “good” performance in listening

ability when they are taken as an entire group and classified according to sex,

parents’ annual income and parents’ educational attainment. Also, when students

are taken as an entire group and classified according to sex, parents’ annual income

and parents’ educational attainment, they had a “very satisfactory” academic

performance. However, a significant difference noted in the students’ listening ability

when they were classified according to their parents’ annual income. There is also no

significant difference in the academic performance of students when they were

classified according variables. The study also revealed that there is a significant but

weak positive relationship between listening ability and academic performance of

Grade 10 students. This implies that students who are very good in listening ability

are also outstanding in academic performance.

Based on the findings, it is concluded that the Grade 10 students has good

listening ability. They can easily absorb the information delivered by the speaker, in

that, they know how to respond, understand and react to the message. Also, the

Grade 10 students has a very satisfactory in terms of academic excellence regardless

of their sex, parents’ annual income and parents’ educational attainment.

Based on the aforementioned findings and conclusions, the researchers

recommended that the school administrators should implement and provide

materials that are suited to the needs of the students to enhance their effective

listening ability. The teachers should encouraged to make use of the speech

laboratories of the schools. Teachers should consider the individual differences, the

economic background, abilities and interest of the students. Teachers should also

improve their teaching strategies for best learning result especially in listening area.

Through this, the students could improve knowledge through learning by listening.
