CLASS ASSIGNMENT
SUBJECT-PHYSICS
TOPIC- Ray Optics

1. A mirror is turned through 15°. Through what angle will the reflected ray turn?

2. Velocity of light in a liquid is 1.5 x 10 8 m/s and in air, it is 3 x 10 8 m/s. If a ray of light passes from
liquid into the air, calculate the value of critical angle.

3. Why does a convex lens of glass of refractive index 1.5 behave as a diverging lens when immersed
in carbon disulphide of refractive index 1.65?

4. If a person uses spectacles of power +1.0D, what is the nearest distance of distinct vision for him?
Given that near point of the person is 75cm from the eye.

5. Figure shows a cross-section of a ‘light pipe’ made of a glass fibre of refractive index 1.68. The outer
covering of the pipe is made of a material of refractive index 1.44. What is the range of the angles
of incident rays with the axis of the pipe for which total reflections inside the pipe take place as
shown.

6. Light of wavelength λ1 propagates from medium 1 incident at angle θ1. The angle inside medium 2
is θ2 . What is its wavelength in medium 2?

7. A dentist uses a small concave mirror of focal length 16mm to view a cavity in the tooth of a patient
by holding the mirror at a distance of 8mm from the cavity. Calculate the magnification

8. Show that for a concave mirror, a virtual object forms a real image which is always diminished

9. From the ray diagram shown in the following figure, calculate the focal length of the concave lens.
(Ans: V=-30cm)
10. A glass convex lens has a power of +10D. When this lens is totally immersed in a liquid, it act as a
concave lens of focal length 50 cm. Calculate the refractive index of the liquid. Given 𝑔𝑎µ= 1.5.
(Ans: 1.67) 11. Find the position of the image formed by the lens combination.
(Ans: (v3=30cm)

12. A ray PQ incident on the face AB of a prism ABC, as shown in the figure, emerges from the face AC
such that AQ= AR. Draw the ray diagram to show the passage of the ray through the prism. If the
angle of prism is 60° and refractive index of the material of the prism is , determine the values
of angle of incidence and angle of deviation.

13. The radius of curvature of each surface of a convex lens is 20 cm and refractive index of the
material of the lens is 3/2.
(i) Calculate its focal length.
(ii) If this is cut along the plane AB , what will be the focal length of each two halves so formed?
(iii) What happens if the lens is cut along CD?
