CASE IILUSTRATIONS
A 18-Year-Old Woman with complaints of weakness of the both lower limbs since 1 month
accompanied with occasional cough and intermittent fever. Decreased appetite and the patient
has losed 10 kilograms weight in the last 1 month. Neurological examination, strength was 0 in
both lower limbs. The results of microbiological tests on sputum negative Tuberculosis (TB)
infection. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis results showed TB infection. Chest X-ray fibrosis
in the left hemithorax. After observation, it was found that the patient was TBM.
DISCUSSION
Meningitis is an inflammatory reaction which occurs in the lining membrane that encloses the
brain tissue (arachnoid, piamater) and spinal cord, called the meningen. TBM is still a major
cause of neurological disabilities and death. Meningitis survivors can be left with disabling
neurological sequelae such as seizures, hearing and vision loss, neuromotor disability and
hydrocephalus. In our patient, has neurological symptoms weakness in both lower limbs.
Conclusion
Difficult to diagnose and treat, tuberculous meningitis generally causes long-term neurological
disability in those who survive.
