PRONOUNS

Defini-on of pronoun:
A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun phrase or noun
expression (a name, place, or thing in a sentence, phrase, or
word).

Pronouns can be used for one person or more than one person.

Read the table given below:-

Examples:-

Suhani is my best friend. Suhani loves cooking.


Suhani is my best friend. She loves cooking.

Rahul, Vijay, and Shekhar are going to play cricket.


They are going to play cricket.
Will Alex be going to the party with Peter?
Will she be going to the party with him?

Ruhi is a dancer. Ruhi is an intelligent girl.


Ruhi is a dancer. She is an intelligent girl.

John brought some cards from Anita.


He brought some cards from her.

I. Personal Pronouns

The pronouns which replaced with the specific name of a


person or subject.
The personal pronouns are I, we, he, she, her, him, them, us,
we, me, and you.

Personal pronouns are of three kinds:-


1. First person– I, we, me, us
2. Second Person– you
3. Third person– he, she, him, her, it, they, them
Look at the table given below to understand the kinds of
personal pronouns:-

1. It is a beautiful dress.
2. She cooks delicious food.
3. They are going to meet him at the party.
4. He is a brave boy.
5. We are going on a long trip.
6. They are laughing loudly.
7. You are a brilliant student.
8. Her hair is so long,
9. Please tell him to bring a cup of tea.
10. I and Rajiv are going to play badminton.
II. Possessive Pronouns

The possessive pronouns are pronouns used to indicate


ownership.

Eg: The pen is mine.


Are these notebooks yours?

The possessive pronouns are listed below:

1. mine
2. his
3. yours
4. hers
5. theirs
6. ours

Points to remember:
1. Possessive pronouns generally appear at the end of a
sentence.
2. They end with a (s) except for MINE and HIS.
3. DO NOT USE ‘ contraction sign for possessive pronouns.
Eg: hers (correct) her’s (wrong)
Ours (correct) our’s (wrong)
Examples of Possessive Pronouns

1. This pen is mine.


2. The cricket pad is theirs.
3. This seat of mine. Where is yours?
4. The entire security force is theirs.
5. These are all my dresses, not hers.
