FACTORING

PREPARED BY: MR. JERRY MAE A. RANES

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
▪ Understand the concept of factoring;
▪ Apply these concepts to factor expressions and solve
problems; and
▪ Recognize real-world situations where these concepts can be
used.

GREATEST COMMON
FACTOR

3
GREATEST COMMON FACTOR
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑎𝑦 = 𝑎 𝑥 + 𝑦

For this factoring, we need to find the greatest common factor (GCF)
of the polynomial. Then, divide each term by the GCF. The factor is in
the form: GCF×(Quotient of Original Expression and GCF).

DIFFERENCE OF TWO
SQUARES

7
DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES
𝑥2 − 𝑦2 = 𝑥 + 𝑦 𝑥 − 𝑦

This is literally the reverse process of the product of sum and difference
of two terms. Keep in mind that 𝑥 and 𝑦 represent the first and second
term, respectively.

TRINOMIALS OF THE FORM 𝒙 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄

𝑥 2 + 𝑎 + 𝑏 𝑥 + 𝑎𝑏 = 𝑥 + 𝑎 𝑥 + 𝑏

This type is subject to trial and checking. Notice that the sum of the
factors of the last term should be equal to the coefficient of the middle
term.

What we will do is we set up a table for factors of the last term and test
which will have a sum equal to the coefficient of the middle term.

TRINOMIALS OF THE FORM 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄

𝑎𝑏𝑥 2 + 𝑎𝑑 + 𝑏𝑐 𝑥 + 𝑐𝑑 = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑐 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑑

Basically, we need to factor the coefficients of the leading term and the
last term then check the sum of the cross product if it is equal to the
coefficient of the middle term. Remember that the position of 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐,
and 𝑑 matters.

34
FOUR-TERM POLYNOMIAL BY GROUPING

𝑎𝑥 + 𝑎𝑦 − 𝑏𝑥 − 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 𝑥 + 𝑦

Sometimes proper grouping of terms is necessary to make the given

polynomial factorable. This is usually applied to polynomials with at least
4 terms.
