11+ MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS for entry in September 2018

MUSIC AT KING’S
King’s has a large and well-equipped music department and offers many opportunities for music-making, both
instrumental and vocal. Work is well underway on a new state-of-the-art music school, with outstanding facilities,
which will be completed early in 2018.
THE AWARD
Boys applying for entry to King’s at 11+ now have the opportunity to be considered for music scholarships. We are
looking for talented and committed musicians who want to be involved in the musical life of the school. One or
more scholarships worth up to £1,500 of the school tuition fee, plus free instrumental tuition on two instruments,
may be awarded each year. It may also be possible to gain a smaller award known as an exhibition. This will
depend on the quality of the candidates each year.
WHO SHOULD APPLY
We are looking for instrumental players of outstanding ability and potential. As a guideline we would expect a boy
of approximately grade 5 standard on his first instrument to be a promising candidate. You will probably be playing
another instrument too and you may be able to sing very well. The director of Music, Daniel Phillips, would be very
pleased to meet boys who are interested in a scholarship. He will listen to them play, give them advice on
preparation for the audition and discuss music opportunities at King’s, in the lower school and beyond. If you would
like to meet him, please contact Sarah Stuart (lowerschooladmissions@kcs.org.uk) who will be pleased to make an
appointment. Please note that Music scholarship applicants must be registered to sit our entry tests.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply, please complete the music scholarship application form and return, along with a supporting reference, to
Sarah Stuart in the admissions office. The deadline for applications is 16 th November 2017 and scholarship
application forms are available to download from the 11+ scholarship page of our website. References may be
supplied with the application form or sent separately, but should arrive by the deadline. Please note that music
scholarship applicants must be registered to sit our entry tests.
THE AUDITION
The music scholarship auditions will take place at King’s College School on Wednesday 24 th and Thursday 25th
January. Each candidate will be required to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument and one piece
on a second and third instrument, if they play more than one. He may also choose to sing instead of playing a
further instrument. He will be asked to play scales at an appropriate level on his first instrument and there will also
be some sight-reading, aural tests and a short interview. The aural tests will include pitching notes given by the
piano; singing the higher and lower of two notes played simultaneously and to name the interval between them;
singing back a short melodic phrase and clapping back a short rhythm. There may also be further musicianship
tests. We will provide an accompanist, if you wish. Boys will only be invited to an audition if they have done
sufficiently well in the entrance tests to be invited back for an academic interview.
CONDITIONS OF THE AWARD
Boys who receive a music scholarship will be expected to contribute fully to the musical life of the school in all
three terms. For this reason it is not practical for boys to hold both a sports and music award. Boys who are
awarded a scholarship will be required to comply with the terms and conditions of the award.
