The Causes of the World War I


 World War I was started by a single bullet, used by a 19 year old, Gaurilo Princip - a Serbian
nationalist, to assassinate Austro Hungarian Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand. This bullet would set off
a chain reaction of events that would envelop the whole world, leaf to 20,000,000 deaths and
change the course of human history.

Militarisms
 When countries start dramatically building up their militaries or allow military leaders it make
important government decisions.
 Before world war I Britain and Germany were in a race to build the biggest and most powerful
war ships called dread noughts.
Alliances
 Alliances formed when countries signed secret treaties priorising to support each other in event
of a war.
 The Two Great Alliances
o The Triple Entente - Great Britain, France, Russia
o The Triple Alliances - Germany, Austria Hungry, The ottoman Empire
Imperialism
 Imperialism is when countries form empires by taking over other countries and regions and
ruling over them.
 During this time, the European empires ruled over most of the world.
Nationalism
 A sense of national superiority that leads peoples to people to put their own national interests
aggressively ahead of other nations. This can often lead to violent hatred.
