• The test consists of 5 pages and 3 questions worth a total of 20 marks.

• This is a closed-book examination. None of the following are allowed:

documents, cheat sheets or electronic devices of any kind (including calcu-
lators, cell phones, etc.)

• No work on this page will be marked.

• Fill in the information below before turning to the questions. Your “Sec-
tion” is your small class discussion section.

1. 8 marks ★★☆☆ Suppose the tangent line to the graph of f (x) at x = 3 is
y = 5x − 2, and suppose y = 4x + 1 is the tangent line to the graph of g(x)
at x = 3.
(a) Find the equation of the tangent line to y = f (x)g(x) at x = 3.

Solution: The equation of the tangent line to y = f (x)g(x) at x = 3

is

y = (f g)(3)+(f g) (3)(x−3) = f (3)g(3)+[f (3)g(3)+f (3)g (3)](x−3)

′ ′ ′

Since f and its tangent line have the same values and derivatives at
x = 3, f (3) = 13 and f (3) = 5. Similarly g(3) = 13 and g (3) = 4.
′ ′
2
Thus, f (3)g(3) = 13 ⋅ 13 = 13 (= 169) and f (3)g(3) + f (3)g (3) =
′ ′

5 ⋅ 13 + 13 ⋅ 4 = 13 ⋅ 9(= 117) and the required tangent line is

2
y = 13 + 13 ⋅ 9(x − 3) = 169 + 117(x − 3).

f (x)
(b) Find the equation of the tangent line to y = at x = 3.
g(x)

Solution: The equation of the tangent line to f (x)/g(x) at x = 3

is

f (3) f (3)g(3) − f (3)g (3)

′ ′
f f ′
y = ( g ) (3)+( g ) (3)(x−3) = +[ ] (x−3).
g(3) g(3)2

We use the values f (3) = 13 and f (3) = 5, g(3) = 13 and g (3) = 4

′ ′

computed above to find f (3)/g(3) = 1 and

f (3)g(3) − f (3)g (3)

′ ′
5 ⋅ 13 − 13 ⋅ 4 13 1
[ ] = = = ,
g(3)2 132 132 13

giving the tangent line

1
y =1+ (x − 3).

2. 6 marks ★★★☆ Consider the function f (x) below

⎪ mx + b for x < 0,

f (x) = ⎨ 1 for x = 0 .

⎩g(x) for x > 0.

where m and b are constants and g satisfies the differential equation

g =g

(a) What is g(x)?

x
Solution: g(x) = ce where c could be anything.

(b) If f is continuous, what is the value of b?

Solution: We must have b = 1.

(c) If f is differentiable, what are the possible values of m and b? Justify

briefly.

Solution: Since g (0) = c we must have m = c. To be differentiable,

the function must also be continuous so b = 1 and c = 1.

3. 6 marks ★★★☆

The functions f (x) and g(x) are defined by their graphs below. Answer each
of the following questions.

(a) If h(x) = f (x) + g(x), what is lim h(x)? Is h(x) a continuous function
x→1
for the values of x shown?

(b) If h(x) = f (x) − g(x), what is lim h(x)? Is h(x) a continuous function
x→1
for the values of x shown?

4
(c) If h(x) = f (x)/g(x), what is lim h(x)? Note that f (x) for x > 1 is
x→2
cubic, and g(x) for x > 1 is quadratic.

(d) If h(x) = g(x)/f (x), what is lim h(x)?

x→2

Solution:
(a) From the left side we have lim− h(x) = 2 + (−2) = 0. From the right
x→1
side, lim+ h(x) = (−1) + 1 = 0. So lim h(x) = 0. h(x) is continuous
x→1 x→1
because h(1) = 1 + (−1) = 0 = lim h(x).
x→1

(b) From the left side we have lim− h(x) = 2 − (−2) = 4. From the right
x→1
side, lim+ h(x) = −1 − 1 = −2. So lim h(x) does not exist. h(x) is
x→1 x→1
not continuous because lim h(x) does not exist.
x→1

3 2
(c) For x > 2, f (x) = A(x − 2) and g = B(x − 2) . Therefore,
A
lim f (x)/g(x) behaves like (x − 2) and so is equal to 0.
x→2 B
B
(d) Same idea as above but flipped so lim g(x)/f (x) = lim
x→2 x→2 A(x − 2)
which does not exist.
