Edison the Great Inventor

Exam 1

Think about your daily life. We call our friends using the telephone. We
turn on the lights to read and write. We listen to music using CDs. We watch
movies in movie theatres. Have you ever wonder who invented all these
things? As you may have heard of, these inventions were invented by Thomas
Edison. He was seen as the greatest inventor ever in America.

Thomas Edison was born in Ohio in 1847. When he was young, he almost
never attended school. His mother, who used to be a teacher, taught him to
read, write and calculate. He was curious about everything, so he read a lot of
books on his own. As he grew up, he became fascinated with technology, so
he started to work on science experiments at home. To earn money for buying
equipment for experiments, he started selling candy when he was 12. From
his childhood, we can see why he eventually became a successful inventor.

When Edison was twenty-nine, he established his own industrial

research lab. He and his employees worked day and night on research
and development. Over his career as an inventor, he invented or improved
inventions such as telegraph, telephone, light bulb, movie camera and viewer,
phonograph, electricity system and battery. These inventions influenced our
lives greatly, such that even after more than a hundred years, we are still
using his inventions!

Our lives keep improving thanks to great inventors such as Thomas

Edison. Nowadays, there are also many great inventors working hard all over
the world. Do you want to be one of them too?
