is valid for a homenergic and irrotational steady flow of a fluid, having constant
composition (or in chemical equilibrium, if it is a reacting mixture), which does not have
to be an ideal gas.
2. Show, by comparing Jacobian j to zero, that the dependent variables u and v must remain
constant along one family of physical characteristics of a simple wave in a two-dimensional
homenergic and irrotational supersonic steady flow.
3. A thin flat plate is placed at angle of attack of 100 in a homenergic and irrotational
supersonic stream of air whose Mach number is 2.33, as shown in the sketch. Determine
the direction of waves in the flow field and the flow Mach numbers in regions 2, 3, 4 and
5. Assume horizontal flow behind the plate. Check the validity of this assumption by
comparing the pressures in regions 4 and 5. How could you determine states 4 and 5, taking
into account nonhorizontal flow behind the plate (downwash or upwash)? Take k = 7/5.

4. A symmetrical airfoil, having the cross-section shown in the figure, is placed at zero angle
of attack in a stream of air. If the free stream Mach number is 2.0 and the free stream static
pressure is 100 kPa, determine the direction of the waves and find the Mach numbers, static

pressures and total pressures in regions 2, 3 and 4. Show states 2 and 3 on the hodograph
plane. Sketch the paths of fluid particles crossing the waves.

6. The two-dimensional airfoil is placed in an air stream with a Mach number of 2.1, as shown
