The Nigerian Government, in the year 1973, established the

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). It is to be

undertaken by students in tertiary institutions pursuing courses in
engineering, applied sciences and arts with the basic aim of
bridging the gap between the theoretical and the practical aspect
of their education. The Industrial Trust Fund(ITF) is handed the
responsibility of managing/monitoring this scheme alongside
stakeholders- the federal government, employers/industry,
tertiary institutions, the students and also supervising agencies
such as NBTE and NUC.
INTRODUCTION TO/BRIEF
OVERVIEW OF HYCO AUTO
TECHNICAL WORKS
 HYCO AUTO TECHNICAL WORKS is an automobile
service company that has been in existence for over 20
years. It is situated in Agidingbi Mechanic Village, Ikeja,
Lagos state. Its location is in a major business hub of
Nigeria, indicating a continuously increasing demand for
the services provided here. This demand is met by Tech.
Okeke Hyacinth in conjuction with the members of his
workforce. Mr. Okeke Hyacinth, the CEO of this company,
is also the Vice Chairman of the mechanic village,
indicating a higher responsibility for both he and his staffs.
 In this company, the staffs include- technicians,
apprentices, interns. Operations carried out include:
general maintenance services (preventive and corrective),
sales and customers advise.

The car user reports the case to
the senior technician, who then
inspects or test drives the
vehicle to observe the reported
fault and other related
anomaly. Diagnosis of the cause
of the problem is next which is
then followed by repairs-
correction of the fault. The
senior technician is the last to
handle the car in order to
certify that the car is in the
desired shape before handing it
over to the owner. He also
makes recommendations to the
user to ensure optimum and
long-lasting car performance.
JOBS/WORKS CARRIED OUT
DURING MY INDUSTRIAL
TRAINING
 During my industrial training, my place of primary assignment was at
the mechanical branch. Though I had the opportunity to explore other
departments during my stay since this is a very interconnected field of
operation. The activities I was involved in include:
 Ensuring that tools are available for use during operations.
 Carrying out regular maintenance check (servicing) involving
replacement of Oil filters, worn out brake pads, leaking and
replacement of brake fluid.
 Inspection of gear oil quality and level.
 Diagnosis of engine problems.
 Replacement of lower arm bushing.
 Inspection of wheels stability.
 Vehicle suspension replacement.
 Detection of sensor problems and replacement of faulty sensors.
 I also visited the welding section(two types- deep welding and panel
beater, aka ).

SENSOR TECHNOLOGY IN
CARS
 Since the mandatory introduction of sensors in this field
in 1996, the On-Board Diagnostic Scanner has been
employed, making it easier to carry out troubleshooting
with more ease compared to the previous method (often
by trial and error).
SENSOR
S/N SENSOR NAME POSITION FUNCTION

1 CAMSHAFT POSITION Behind the cylinder To determine the position of the camshaft as it relates to the
SENSOR head crankshaft. It also helps to know which cylinder is approaching the
top dead centre. This information is used by the ECY in adjusting
fuel injection timing.
2 OXYGEN SENSOR Dipped into the Monitors the proportion of oxygen in the exhaust gases , compares
exhaust stream, near it with the oxygen content of ambient air and determines whether
the exhaust manifold the engine is running a rich or lean fuel ratio. This information is
and after the catalytic sent to the ECU to determine fuel metering strategy and emissions
converter control.
3 MASS AIR FLOW Between this air filter Used to determine the mass flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected
SENSOR and the engine intake combustion engine. This information is sent to the ECU to balance
manifold and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine.

4 COOLANT In the coolant pipe , Used to monitor the engine coolant temperature and the computer depends

5 KNOCK SENSOR Engine block or Used to ensure that the fuel is being burnt smoothly. It helps to alte
cylinder head ignition timing and prevent knocking by supplying information to
the PCM after sensing engine vibrations.

7 VEHICLE SPEED Within the anti-lock The output of this sensor is utilized by the odometer to read the

8 FUEL TEMPERATURE Either in the tank or used to check the temperature of the fuel continually whether the
SENSOR under the hood fuel utilization is optimum or not.
SKILLS GAINED DURING
THIS TRAINING
 Analytical Skills-Understanding the sequence
of repair operation for various problems.
 Technical Skills- Using the OBD II scanner
and other workshop tools.
 Exposure to engine components like the spark
plug, fuel injector nozzle,
 Teamwork, Leadership and Communication
Skills.
 I learnt how to operate an OBD II scanner.
 Time management and Prioritization of
tasks.
CONCLUSION &
RECOMMENDATION
 This period of Industrial training has increased
my interest in mechanical engineering. It was an
eye opener and a bridge between what I learnt in
class and the professional pattern of operation in
the engineering field.
 I hope that the next set of Industrial trainees will
make great use of this opportunity/scheme.
