ABB
What is a regenerative drive?
◼ A drive that can, under braking conditions, convert the
mechanical energy of the motor and connected load into electrical
energy which is returned (or regenerated) to the network
◼ Equipped with an active supply unit
◼ Allow efficient utilization of electricity and cost savings
◼ Applications with cyclic or continuous braking
◼ Braking energy returned to network - not wasted
◼ No additional resistor for energy dissipation
◼ Space saving
◼ No need for handling the waste heat

Why regenerative drives?

◼ Energy and money savings

◼ Voltage stabilisation
◼ Line converter control follows DC voltage
reference
◼ In low network voltage conditions, motor still gets
full voltage
◼ Voltage boosting
◼ It is possible to set DC voltage reference to
higher value
◼ … and use 500 Vac class equipment in 400 Vac
network
◼ Redundancy in high power units
◼ Built-in redundancy through parallel connected

modules in high power range

◼ Each module is a complete three-phase inverter

ABB
ACS800 application program examples

◼ Crane control for fast and safe crane control

◼ Centrifuge control for effective separation of solids from liquids
and coordinates speed difference control
◼ Extruder control for reliable and safe extrusion
◼ Master/follower for load sharing between mechanically
connected motors
◼ Pump and fan for sequential closed loop control of pumps
control and fans
◼ Spinning & traverse for high quality yarn production
control
◼ Motion control for positioning and synchronising
in machinery applications

Start-up

◼ The start-up procedure of the drive is normally

performed in local mode either via the Control Panel
or with a PC
◼ The start-up procedure includes actions which need
to be performed only when the drive is powered up
for the first time e.g.
◼ Setting the language
◼ Entering the motor data according to the motor nameplate
◼ Motor identification, and
◼ Setting speed limits and acceleration/deceleration times
© Copyright 7/29/2022 ABB.
All rights reserved. - 62 -

◼ The procedure varies depending on the application

The basic Functions of the Start-up

◼ Language selection (Parameter 99.01)

◼ Application macro (Parameter 99.02)
◼ Motor Setup (Parameters 99.04-99.10)
◼ Upload and download parameters
◼ Backup & restore
◼ Direction of rotation
◼ Speed limits (Parameters 20.01-20.02)

All rights reserved. - 63 -

◼ Acceleration/deceleration times (Parameters

22.01-20.05)
Motor Nameplate
◼ Before performing any motor setup operations
check the following values in the motor name plate:

1. Motor nominal voltage

2. Motor nominal current
3. Motor nominal frequency
4. Motor nominal speed
5. Motor nominal power

Setting Start-up Parameters

◼ There are two different ways to set the drive start-

up parameters locally:
◼ Control Panel
– Start-upis limited to basic settings without
guidance
◼ PC Tool
– e.g. DriveWindow

◼ DTC is suitable for most cases
◼ SCALAR is recommended
– For multimotor drives
◼ If the load is not equally shared between the motors
◼ If the motors are different sizes
◼ If the motors are going to be changed after the motor
identification

– When the nominal current of the motor is less than

1/6 of the nominal output current of the drive
(inverter)

– When the drive is used for test purposes with no

motor connected and if a motor ID Run or
Magnetization cannot be performed

Motor Identification
◼ Drive performs ID Magnetization automatically at
the first start
◼ ID Run or ID Magnetization has to be performed if
motor values are changed
◼ Cannot be performed if scalar control is selected
◼ The Run Enable signal must be active (16.01)
◼ Note!
– If the motor is not suitable for use with a frequency
converter, the ID Run or Magnetization may fail. Scalar

Selecting the Identification Mode

◼ Select the motor identification method in Motor
Setup (9/10) or by setting parameter 99.10
MOTOR ID RUN MODE
◼ Possible modes are ID MAGN, REDUCED or
STANDARD
◼ Default value is ID MAGN (ID Magnetization)

ID Magnetization
◼ Drive performs the ID magnetization automatically at
the first start
◼ Suitable for most applications
◼ The motor is magnetized at zero speed for 20 to 60s
◼ The drive calculates the motor model

Why should drives be connected to a fieldbus?

◼ In a system consisting of several

drives, number of I/O signals to be
wired increases and fieldbus
provides cheaper and more reliable
alternative to control the drive
◼ Drive can be configured, FIELDBUS

parameterized and monitored via

fieldbus operation
I/O’s from sensors
◼ Drive provides lots of diagnostics
information via fieldbus interface
