LET US STUDY

A sport is a structured physical activity that uses different movement patterns and
requires physical conditioning and complex skills. All sports have governing bodies that sets
rules to ensure fair competition and arrange events. Sports can play in a recreational
purpose for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of
skill, or some combination of these.

It is classified into individual, dual, team sports and combative sports. Individual
Sports is participated by two opposing individuals while Dual Sports is a type of sports
that are played by two people playing against each other. This is similar to Team Sports,
which refers to sports where two groups play against each other. On the other hand, a
Combat Sport, is a competitive contact sport that usually involves one-on-one combat.

LET US PRACTICE

Essential movement patterns in sports usually involve the following seven

fundamental movements: Pull, Push, Squat, Lunge, Hinge, Rotation and Gait. All other
exercises are merely variations of these movements. Let us learn all these fundamental
movements and try to execute each. Instructions with illustrations are provided below. If
possible, record your performance. Make sure the performance area is safe and free from
hazardous materials. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid injury.

Pull

Is a pulling motion which consists of pulling a

weight toward your body or your body towards your
hands. This can be a vertical or horizontal pull, such as a
pull up.

Push

This movement involves pushing a weight

away from your body or your body away from an
object. This group is also divided into a vertical and

back up. Variations of the squat include goblet squats,
sumo squats, front squats and much more.

LET US PRACTICE MORE

Choose a specific sport. Then, create a sequence of exercise that will help enhance a
specific sports skill component required in your chosen sport (e.g., leg muscle power for
rebounding in basketball, muscular strength in powerlifting, etc.). Use the 7 fundamental
movements discussed on the previous section in creating your exercise sequence. Guide
questions are provided below to help you come up with your exercise sequence:
 What is your chosen sport?
 What is your intended target sport skill to be enhanced?
 What is the Fundamental Movement to be used: (Choose three from the following:
pull, push, squat, hinge, lunge, rotation and gait)
 How are you going to do it? (Mechanics)
 What are the safety precautions for this exercise?

Execute the exercise sequence you have created for 8 repetitions each movement (1 set
only). If possible, record your performance through a video and send it to your teacher. Tell
something about your experience through the evaluation part below.

EVALUATION

Reflection Guide Questions:

1. What Sport did you chose in the “Let us Practice More” part? Why did you chose it?
2. What exercises did you perform related to the sport you chose?
3. What do you think are the health-related fitness you have optimized through these
exercises?
4. What are the factors you considered in your safety precautions?
5. Tell something more about your experience.

In this evaluation, you will be graded based on the following criteria:
