Elements of Short Story- Conflict
Every story needs to have a problem and this problem is called conflict. The main character,
also called the protagonist, needs to have someone or something to challenge him. Without conflict, the
story will not go anywhere and will not be very interesting to the readers.
There are different types of Conflict
Man vs. Man
* Two or more characters have a problem Example: The Lady and the Tiger
Man vs. Nature
* Characters have to fight against a force of nature. Example: The Wave
Man vs. Society
*character fights against rules of society. Example: The Hunger Games
Man vs. Self
* The character is dealing with an internal struggle. Example: Tom Sawyer doesn’t know if he
should testify in court against Injun Joe
Conflict may also be classified as Internal or External.
An internal conflict is the struggle occurring within a character's mind. Things such as the character views
for, but can't quite reach. An internal conflict can also be a decision-making issue.
External conflict generally takes place between a person and someone or something else, such as
nature, another person or persons, or an event or situation.
