Problem # 1
A 1 m3 tank contains 3.5 kg of steam (H2O).
1) At pressure of 775 kPa, determine the temperature of the steam, using (a) the ideal gas
equation, (b) the steam tables. Calculate the error percentage in using ideal gas
assumption.
2) Determine the temperature in part (1) but now consider the pressures of 0.1 MPa and 1
MPa. Comment on the values.

Problem # 2
Consider an ordinary shower where hot water at T1 = 65 oC is mixed with cold water at T2 = 5 oC.
It is desired to steadily supply warm water at T 3 for the daily use. Compute the outlet
temperature T3 of the exit water from the mixing point if the ratio of the mass flow rates of the
hot to cold water varies from 0.2 to 4 with an increment of 0.2. Plot the outlet temperature as a
function of the mass ratio (of hot to cold water). Determine the most suitable mass ratio or range
of the mass ratios, provide your justification.

Hint: Assume the heat losses from the mixing chamber to be negligible and the mixing to take
place at a constant pressure of 250 kPa.

Problem # 3
A heat engine operates between a source at T H and a sink at TL= 30°C. If heat is supplied to the
heat engine (QH) at a steady rate of 20 kJ/s (kW), then study the effect of T H on the Carnot cycle
thermal efficiency. TH varies from 300 to 1000°C. Plot the cycle efficiency versus T H and
comment on the results.
