BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
BIOLOGY TOPICS (Research work) FOR S.3 TERM 1 2024

THEME: TRANSPORT IN PLANTS AND ANIMALS

CHAPTER: TRANSPORT IN PLANTS
Key words;
Transport, Diffusion, Osmosis, Active transport, Hypertonic solution, Hypotonic
solution, Isotonic solution, Haemolysis, Crenation, Turgid, Turgor pressure, Plasmolysis,
Flaccid
By the end of this chapter, you should be able to;
➢ Know the meaning of the term ‘Transport.’

➢ List the materials transported within the body of an organism.

➢ List and describe the three main processes by which materials move in and out of

the cells.i.e. diffusion, osmosis and active transport.

➢ Demonstrate the process of diffusion in liquids. Hint; you can use a tea bag,

crystals of potassium permanganate/ copper (ii) sulphate

➢ Describe factors affecting the rate of diffusion.

➢ Describe terms used in osmosis. E.g. Hypertonic solution, Hypotonic solution,

isotonic solution e.t.c.

➢ Describe what happens to animal cells when put in solutions of different

concentrations.

➢ Describe what happens to plant cells when put in solutions of different

concentrations.
➢ Carryout an experiment to demonstrate osmosis in plant tissues. (using an Irish

potato)

➢ Carryout an experiment to show the effect of solute concentration on plant

tissues. (using an Irish potato)

➢ Draw and describe the structure of transport vessels in flowering plants. i.e. xylem

and phloem

➢ Describe how the root hair is adapted for absorption of water and mineral salts.

➢ Define the term transpiration.

➢ State the importance of transpiration. (to plants and the environment)

➢ Describe the factors that affect the process of transpiration.

➢ Conduct experiments to understand the factors that affect the process of

transpiration.

➢ Discuss adaptations of plants to reduce the rate of transpiration.

➢ Define translocation.

Sample activity of integration

Enyou and Kijjambu attended a workshop on mango growing. The agricultural
specialist who doubled as the extension worker divided people in the workshop into
groups depending on the regions where they were coming from. Kijjambu from Ssese
Islands (wet region) was encouraged to plant many young trees (grafts) whereas
Enyou from Moroto (dry region) was advised to plant only a few grafts.
TASK;
Using the knowledge and understanding you have acquired from this chapter, prepare
a write up why Enyou was advised on the number of trees to plant as compared to
Kijjambu.
